The ferraboratrane [kappa4-B(mim(Bu)t)3]Fe(CO)2 (mim(Bu)t = 2-mercapto-1-tert-butylimidazolyl), the first example of a complex which possesses a retrodative (i.e., metal-to-ligand) Fe-->B bond, is obtained via reaction of the tris(2-mercapto-1-tert-butylimidazolyl)hydroborato complex [Tm(Bu)t]FeCl with LiCH2SiMe3 followed by treatment with CO. Significantly, [kappa4-B(mim(Bu)t)3]Fe(CO)2 exhibits novel reactivity towards a variety of reagents that results in eradication of the Fe-->B bond via a formal 1,2-addition process and the formation of B-functionalized tris(mercaptoimidazolyl)borate derivatives, [XTm(Bu)t]FeY.

Iron-nitrogen functionalized graphene has emerged as a promising cathode host for rechargeable lithium-sulfur batteries (RLSBs) due to its affordability and enhanced battery performance. To optimize its catalytical efficiency, we propose a novel approach involving coordination engineering. Our investigation spans a plethora of catalysts with varied coordination environments, focusing on elements B, C, N and O.

Conventional inorganic coagulants (Al, Fe) and Al/Fe-based covalently bonded flocculants (CAFMs) had different hydrolysis species at different pHs, which subsequently led to differences in their binding sites and complexation ability with humic acid (HA). Studying the binding sites and interactions between CAFMs, AlCl (Al), and FeCl (Fe) hydrolysates and HA molecules is critical to understanding the coagulation mechanism. The results found that CAFM , Al, and AlCl combined FeCl (Al/Fe) removed more than 90% of HA at pH 6, and CAFMs showed higher HA removal rate than that of Al, Fe, and Al/Fe under the same reaction conditions.

Mechanistic Insights into the N-Hydroxylations Catalyzed by the Binuclear Iron Domain of SznF Enzyme: Key Piece in the Synthesis of Streptozotocin.

SznF, a member of the emerging family of heme-oxygenase-like (HO-like) di-iron oxidases and oxygenases, employs two distinct domains to catalyze the conversion of N-methyl-L-arginine (L-NMA) into N-nitroso-containing product, which can subsequently be transformed into streptozotocin. Using unrestricted density functional theory (UDFT) with the hybrid functional B3LYP, we have mechanistically investigated the two sequential hydroxylations of L-NMA catalyzed by SznF's binuclear iron central domain. Mechanism B primarily involves the O-O bond dissociation, forming Fe(IV)=O, induced by the H/e introduction to the Fe side of μ-1,2-peroxo-Fe(III/III), the substrate hydrogen abstraction by Fe(IV)=O, and the hydroxyl rebound to the substrate N radical.

The tetranuclear iron(III) compounds [Fe(μ-O)(μ-L)] (-) were obtained by reaction of FeCl with the shortened salen-type NO tetradentate Schiff bases -(salicylidene)--Z-phenylmethanediamine HL (Z = NO, Cl and OMe, respectively), where the one-carbon bridge between the two iminic nitrogen donor atoms guide preferentially to the formation of oligonuclear species, and the position of the substituent Z on the central phenyl ring selectively drives towards Fe bis-oxido clusters. All compounds show a flat almost-symmetric butterfly-like conformation of the {Fe(μ-O)} core, surrounded by the four Schiff base ligands, as depicted by both the X-ray molecular structures of and and the optimized geometries of all derivatives as obtained by UM06/6-311G(d) DFT calculations. The strength of the antiferromagnetic exchange coupling constants between the iron(III) ions varies among the three derivatives, despite their magnetic cores remain structurally almost unvaried, as well as the coordination of the metal ions, with a distorted octahedral environment for the two-body iron ions, Fe, and a pentacoordination with trigonal bipyramidal geometry for the two-wing iron ions, Fe.

Iron(II) boryl complexes of the pyrrole-based pincer ligand, PNP (PNP = anion of 2,5-bis(dicyclohexylphophinomethyl)pyrrole) have been synthesized and their insertion reactivity interrogated. Compounds of the type [Fe(BE)(PNP)] (E = pinacholato or catecholato) can be generated by treatment of the precursors, [Fe(OPh)(py)(PNP)] or [FeMe(PNP)], with BE. The boryl complexes are meta stable, but permit additional reactivity with several unsaturated substrates.
