The paper presents the results of molecular virological monitoring of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) by reverse-polymerase chain reaction (followed by sequence of F-gene fragment 374 p.n.) and chick embryo isolation of samples from the avian cloacal swabs collected in the south of the Primorye Territory in September-October 2001-2004. It shows that before 2004, there were only slightly pathogenic variants of NDV of genotype 1 in this region and in 2004 they were added by highly pathogenic variants of subtypes 3a and 5b. The impact of landscaping features of the south of the Primorye Territory on the environment of NDV is discussed.

This study examines nineteen phreatobiological hand pump samples collected in 20092010 in three separate areas of salmon river basins in the southern part of Primorye, in the Far East of Russia. For the first time, faunal groundwater patterns were assessed for the rivers of Eastern Manchuria, the Ussury River Basin and the rivers of the south-western slope of Sikhote Alin. A total of 164 species (including 32 stygobionts) belonging to the phyla Annelida, Mollusca and Arthropoda are first records of groundwater animals, and two of the stygobionts are described below as new species for Science.

Ichthyopterygia is a major clade of reptiles that colonized the ocean after the end-Permian mass extinction, with the oldest fossil records found in early Spathian substage (late Olenekian, late Early Triassic) strata in the western USA. Here, we describe reptilian remains found in situ in the early Spathian Neocolumbites insignis ammonoid zone of South Primorye in the Russian Far East. Specimen NSM PV 23854 comprises fragmentary axial elements exhibiting a combination of morphological characteristics typical of Ichthyopterygia.
