Background: Diarrhea-associated hemolytic uremic syndrome (D+HUS) causes acute renal failure and may lead to podocyte loss. Objective. To determine if the urinary mRNA excretion of podocyte proteins is detectable in children with D+HUS and if it is a biomarker of a poor long-term outcome.
Methods: Patients were randomly selected from participants in the SYNSORB Pk trial. Urine samples were collected daily during the first week of hospitalization. Specimens were also obtained in healthy volunteers. Synaptopodin and nephrin mRNA levels were measured using real-time PCR.

Conclusion: The isolation of podocyte mRNA from routine urine samples is feasible in children with D+HUS. Most patients have podocyturia based on synaptopodin and nephrin mRNA excretion. Larger studies with extended follow-up are required to determine the relationship of these biomarkers to long-term renal prognosis in D+HUS.

In euryhaline teleosts, the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) in seawater (SW)-type chloride cells facilitates apical Cl secretion for SW adaptation, while alternative Cl excretion pathways remain understudied. This study investigates the role of the calcium-activated chloride channel, Anoctamin 1 (ANO1), in the gills of the euryhaline Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) under hyperosmolality and cortisol (CORT) influence. Acclimation to artificial SW, NaCl, mannitol, or glucose significantly upregulated ANO1 and CFTR mRNA expression in gills, unlike urea treatment.

Riboflavin transporter deficiency (RTD) is a rare and progressive neurodegenerative disease resulting from the disruption of RFVT2- and RFVT3- mediated riboflavin transport caused by biallelic mutations in SLC52A2 and SLC52A3, respectively. The resulting impaired mitochondrial metabolism leads to sensorimotor neurodegeneration and symptoms including muscle weakness, respiratory difficulty, and sensorineural deafness. Although over 70% of patients with RTD improve following high-dose riboflavin supplementation, remaining patients either stabilise or continue to deteriorate.
