The nickel bis(dithiolene) complex Ni(S2C2(CF3)2)2 employs its sulfur centers in reactions with alkenes, and stable interligand S-bonded alkene adducts can be formed. The present study shows that the selectivity of alkene binding to charge-neutral Ni(S2C2(CF3)2)2 is influenced by the anion [Ni(S2C2(CF3)2)2]-. In the absence of anion, formation of substituted dihydrodithiins (intraligand addition) dominates, whereas the presence of anion allows for the formation of stable interligand adducts. Mechanistic implications are discussed. The X-ray crystal structure of the ethylene adduct of Ni(S2C2(CF3)2)2 is presented, displaying interligand binding of ethylene to sulfur centers in the bis(dithiolene) complex.

Cancer and infection diseases pose severe threats to public health worldwide stressing the need for more effective and efficient treatments. Thus, the search for broad-spectrum activity drugs seems justifiable and urgent. Herein, we investigate the anticancer and antitrypanosomatid (anti-Trypanosoma cruzi) activities of eight monoanionic metal bis(dithiolene) complexes, [PhP][M(R-thiazdt)] with M = Au, Pt, Pd, Ni, containing N-alkyl-1,3-thiazoline-2-thione dithiolene ligands (R-thiazdt) with different alkyl groups (R = Et, tBu).

Nickel bis(dithiolene) complexes are promising candidates for novel n-type semiconductors, which are air-stable and highly conductive. A key issue for further development is that their synthesis often yields undesired products, greatly limiting the degree of polymerization as well as purity and adversely affecting their electronic properties. Crucially, there is a lack of in-depth identification of these species and understanding of the reaction mechanism.

Monoanionic and neutral nickel(II) and platinum(II) bis(dithiolene) complexes based on the 5,6-diethyl-5,6-dihydro-1,4-dithiin-2,3-dithiolate (de-dddt) chiral ligand have been prepared in racemic and enantiopure forms. Neutral closed-shell species have been generated from monoanionic precursors upon electrocrystallization. The racemic anionic (TBA)[Ni(,-de-dddt)(,-de-dddt)] complex crystallized in the centrosymmetric space group 2/, while the neutral complexes crystallized in the enantiomorphic tetragonal space group 422 or 422.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of 57 iron bis(dithiolene)-N-heterocyclic carbene adducts were conducted to determine what parameters predict, and possibly influence, the coordination of these aforementioned adducts. The parameters considered herein include three different types of nuclear magnetic resonance (C-NMR, Se-NMR, and P-NMR) isotropic chemical shifts, the Tolman Electronic Parameter (TEP), the Huynh Electronic Parameter (HEP), and the percent buried volume (%) of the different N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) calculated from DFT. These parameters were selected based upon prior literature connection to σ-donor ability, π-acidity, and steric effects.

Metallo dithiolene complexes with biological and catalytic relevance are well-known for having strong metal-ligand covalency, which dictates their valence electronic structures. We present the resonant sulfur Kβ (1s3p) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) for a series of Ni and Cu bis(dithiolene) complexes to reveal the ligand sulfur contributions to both the occupied and unoccupied valence orbitals. While S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy played a critical role in identifying the covalency of the unoccupied orbitals of metal dithiolenes, the present focus on XES explores the occupied density of states.
