Essential oil and aqueous extract of basil (Ocimum basilicum) in the diet of pacu (Piaractus mesopotamicus).

Braz J Biol

January 2025

Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS, Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia - FAMEZ, Campo Grande, MS, Brasil.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Ocimum basilicum supplementation in the diet for Piaractus mesopotamicus regarding productive performance, intestinal morphology, muscle residue, and hematological changes after simulated transport stress. Juvenile (23 g±0.08, n = 180) were stocked into 300-L tanks in three treatments and six replicates each: a control diet (not supplemented), a diet with 0.

The Black Sea is affected by numerous anthropogenic pressures, such as eutrophication and pollution through coastal and river discharges, fisheries overexploitation, species invasions, and the impacts of climate change. Growing concerns regarding the cumulative effects of these pressures have necessitated the need for an ecosystem approach to assessing the state of this basin. In recent years, the European Commission-JRC has developed a scientific and modelling tool, the Blue2 Modelling Framework with the aim of exploring the consequences of EU management and policy options on marine ecosystems.

Nonselective beta blockade enhances gut microbiome diversity in a rodent model of trauma, hemorrhage, and chronic stress.

J Trauma Acute Care Surg

November 2024

From the Department of Surgery and Sepsis and Critical Illness Research Center (J.A.M., L.S.K., E.E.P., C.G.A., K.B.K., L.E.B., P.A.E., A.M.M.), University of Florida College of Medicine, Gainesville; and The Gut Biome Lab, Department of Health, Nutrition, and Food Sciences (G.P., R.N.), Florida State University College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, Tallahassee, Florida.

Background: Traumatic injury leads to gut dysbiosis with changes in microbiome diversity and conversion toward a "pathobiome" signature characterized by a selective overabundance of pathogenic bacteria. The use of non-selective beta antagonism in trauma patients has been established as a useful adjunct to reduce systemic inflammation. We sought to investigate whether beta-adrenergic blockade following trauma would prevent the conversion of microbiome to a "pathobiome" phenotype.

Exploring the efficacy of drought tolerant, IAA-producing plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria for sustainable agriculture.

Plant Signal Behav

December 2025

Laboratory of Research and Teaching in Animal Health and Biotechnology, Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.

The growing human population and abiotic stresses pose significant threats to food security, with PGPR favorable as biofertilizers for plant growth and stress relief. In one study, soil samples from both cultivated and uncultivated plants in various cities were used to isolate rhizobacterial populations. Using 50 soil samples from both cultivated and uncultivated plants, isolated rhizobacterial populations were screened for various biochemical changes, PGP activities and morphological characteristics.

Background: Childhood obesity prevalence remains high, especially in racial and ethnic minority populations with low incomes. This epidemic is attributed to various dietary behaviors, including increased consumption of energy-dense foods and sugary beverages and decreased intake of fruits and vegetables. Interactive, technology-based approaches are emerging as promising tools to support health behavior changes.
