1. The effect of various peptide antagonists on capsaicin-induced (250 micrograms per ear) ear inflammation has been examined. 2. Co-administration of the substance P (SP) antagonist [D-Pro2,D-Trp7,9]SP at 100 and 300 micrograms per ear with capsaicin markedly attenuated oedema, whereas a vasopressin antagonist was ineffective. 3. Using the same scheme, the mixed BK2 and BK1 bradykinin (BK) antagonist NPC 567 (D-Arg[Hyp3,D-Phe7]BK) did not inhibit oedema at 100 micrograms per ear, but did inhibit at a higher dose (300 micrograms). The BK1 antagonist [Leu8,desArg9]BK produced significant inhibition at both doses. 4. When BK was used to induce ear inflammation (30 micrograms per ear), the SP antagonist inhibited ear oedema. Both BK receptor subtype antagonists inhibited inflammation with the BK1 being more potent than the BK2 antagonist. 5. These results suggest that BK1 along with BK2 receptors are located on capsaicin-sensitive fibres, where they may modulate the degree of neurogenic inflammation.

Purpose: The routine examination of vitamin D levels is carried out by checking serum 25(OH)D levels, while serum 1.25(OH)D levels are less frequently utilized. The proposition that testing for salivary vitamin D can show a correlation with serum levels in healthy people is questionable, especially with low vitamin D intake.

Developing a facile mechanism for transporting nanoparticles across the whole skin by overcoming the stratum corneum is a challenging task. Herein, a stimuli-responsive and noninvasive transport of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) has been reported through the fabrication of AuNP-incorporated soybean oil-based oleogels (AuG) using stearic acid as a gelator. A series of AuG was formulated by incorporating different proportions of AuNPs and a fixed amount of ciprofloxacin hydrochloride (drug) to establish that the composition with the highest concentration of AuNP (d-AuG4) was associated with the best iontophoretic response, validated via the corresponding in vitro drug release under AC field-induced iontophoresis.

Objective: To compare maternal and cord blood penicillin concentrations in women with and without obesity who are receiving intrapartum group B streptococcus (GBS) prophylaxis.
Methods: We performed a prospective cohort study of term women receiving intrapartum penicillin prophylaxis for GBS colonization (determined by antenatal rectovaginal culture). The following outcomes were compared between obese (body mass index [BMI] 35 or higher at delivery) and nonobese (BMI less than 30 at delivery) groups: penicillin concentration in maternal blood (after two penicillin doses) and umbilical cord blood, GBS rectovaginal colonization status on admission and after two completed doses, and neonatal GBS colonization (using a postnatal ear swab).

The transdermal route for the delivery of therapeutic agents to the inner skin tissues for non-invasive photodynamic therapy; though constitutes a desired modality for treating skin cancer, the success has been limited due to the insurmountable nature of the stratum corneum (SC). In this context, for the first time we report the localization of photosensitizer-conjugated upconversion (UC) particles to the deeper dermal region by overcoming SC through an oleogel-mediated transport mechanism for NIR-induced photodynamic production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We developed soybean oil and stearic acid based oleogels by incorporating photoluminescent white light emitting NaYF (WEN) upconversion (UC) particles conjugated with Rose Bengal (RB), termed as WEN-RB-G.
