In order to study the morphological localization of the endogenous benzodiazepine ligand octadecaneuropeptide (ODN) in rat brain, we have developed antibodies against this peptide. Using a radioimmunoassay for ODN, we have observed that synthetic ODN and serial dilutions of several brain areas gave parallel displacement curves. By light microscope immunocytochemistry, ODN-immunoreactive material was only detected in glial and ependymal cells. Immunolabelled cells were found in high concentrations in the olfactory bulb, hypothalamus, hippocampus, periaqueductal gray, cerebral cortex and the circumventricular organs. In the cerebellar cortex, immunostaining was associated with Bergmann cells. The studies performed at the electron microscopic level confirmed the association of immunoreactive material with glial and ependymal cells. The present results suggest that ODN might play a role in the function of glial cells which have been shown to contain benzodiazepine receptors of the "peripheral type".

Serum starvation induces cytosolic DNA trafficking via exosome and autophagy-lysosome pathway in microglia.

The imbalance of microglial homeostasis is highly associated with age-related neurological diseases, where cytosolic endogenous DNA is also likely to be found. As the main medium for storing biological information, endogenous DNA could be localized to cellular compartments normally free of DNA when cells are stimulated. However, the intracellular trafficking of endogenous DNA remains unidentified.

Regulation of pattern recognition receptor signaling by palmitoylation.

Pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), consisting of Toll-like receptors, RIG-I-like receptors, cytosolic DNA sensors, and NOD-like receptors, sense exogenous pathogenic molecules and endogenous damage signals to maintain physiological homeostasis. Upon activation, PRRs stimulate the sensitization of nuclear factor κB, mitogen-activated protein kinase, TANK-binding kinase 1-interferon (IFN) regulatory factor, and inflammasome signaling pathways to produce inflammatory factors and IFNs to activate Janus kinase/signal transducer and activator of transcription signaling pathways, resulting in anti-infection, antitumor, and other specific immune responses. Palmitoylation is a crucial type of post-translational modification that reversibly alters the localization, stability, and biological activity of target molecules.

Evaluating endogenous viral targets as potential treatment monitoring surrogates for onsite non-potable water reuse.

Onsite non-potable water reuse systems (ONWS) are decentralized systems that treat and repurpose locally collected waters ( greywater or combined wastewater) for uses such as irrigation and flushing toilets. To ensure that treatment is meeting risk benchmarks, it is necessary to monitor the efficacy of pathogen removal. However, accurate assessment of pathogen reduction is hampered by their sporadic and low occurrence rates in source waters and concentrations in treated water that are generally below measurement detection limits.
