Infective endocarditis (IE) is a common complication in patients who inject drugs. We present the case of a 36-year-old woman with IE affecting both the aortic and tricuspid valves, along with a cardiac implantable electronic device infection, 11 weeks after combined aortic valve replacement, tricuspid valve replacement, and pacemaker implantation. The patient declined the medically indicated cardiac surgery due to her recent taxing surgical and rehabilitation experiences.

Transparent light detection devices are attractive for emerging see-through applications such as augmented reality, smart windows and optical communications using light fidelity (Li-Fi). Herein, we present flexible and transparent photodetectors (PDs) using conductive poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene): polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS): Ag nanowires (NWs) based nanofibres and zinc oxide (ZnO) NWs on a transparent and degradable cellulose acetate (CA) substrate. The electrospun (PEDOT:PSS): Ag NW-based nanofibres exhibit a sheet resistance of 11 Ω/sq and optical transmittance of 79% (at 550 nm of wavelength).

Introduction: The leading cause of death in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients is cardiovascular-related events, including myocardial infraction-induced ventricular arrhythmia. Previous studies have shown that T2DM-induced functional remodeling of cardiac vagal postganglionic (CVP) neurons contributes to ventricular arrhythmogenesis. As leptin resistance is common in T2DM patients, and CVP neurons are located in epicardial adipose pads, a tissue that secretes leptin, in this study we aimed to elucidate a correlation between leptin resistance and CVP neuronal dysfunction in T2DM.

A non-randomized pilot study to test the feasibility of developing a frailty scale for pet cats.

Front Vet Sci

February 2025

Department of Medicine and Epidemiology, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of California, Davis, Davis, CA, United States.

Introduction: Human frailty has long been studied and dozens of "frailty scales" have been developed, but equivalent research is more limited in cats. This pilot study aimed to determine the feasibility of recruiting and retaining veterinary practices and owners, collecting study data, and analyzing results about frailty in older cats.

Methods: Participating feline-exclusive practice veterinarians recruited cats aged 11-20 years, of either sex and of any breed.

The importance of genomic surveillance strategies for pathogens has been particularly evident during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, as genomic data from the causative agent, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2), have guided public health decisions worldwide. Bayesian phylodynamic inference, integrating epidemiology and evolutionary biology, has become an essential tool in genomic epidemiological surveillance. It enables the estimation of epidemiological parameters, such as the reproductive number, from pathogen sequence data alone.
