AI Article Synopsis

  • The geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is a type of high-frequency zonal flow seen in toroidal plasmas, which are a specific configuration used in fusion research.
  • Researchers at TEXTOR utilize an O-mode correlation reflectometer to study how GAM influences density fluctuations caused by toroidal curvature effects.
  • The study also examines the spatial distribution of these fluctuations and analyzes their impact on surrounding turbulence, comparing experimental results with theoretical models.

Article Abstract

The geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) is a high frequency branch of zonal flows, which is observed in toroidal plasmas. Because of toroidal curvature effects, density fluctuations are excited, which are investigated with the O-mode correlation reflectometer at TEXTOR. This Letter reports on the poloidal distribution of GAM induced density fluctuation and compares them with theoretical predictions. The influence of the GAM flows on the ambient turbulence is studied, too.

The Alfvén instability nonlinearly excited the energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic mode on the ASDEX-Upgrade tokamak, as demonstrated experimentally. The mechanism of the energetic-particle-driven geodesic acoustic mode excitation and the mode nonlinear evolution is not yet fully understood. In the present work, a first-principles simulation using the MEGA code investigated the mode properties in both the linear growth and nonlinear saturated phases.

Matched-field processing (MFP) achieves underwater source localization by measuring the correlation between the array and replica signals, with traditional MFP being equivalent to estimating the Euclidean distance between the data cross-spectral density matrix (CSDM) and replica matrices. However, in practical applications, random inhomogeneities in the marine environment and inaccurate estimation of CSDM reduce MFP performance. The traditional minimum variance matched-field processor with environmental perturbation constraints perturbs a priori environment parameters to obtain linear constraints and yields the optimal weight vectors as the replica vectors.

Polarization of drift-Alfvén waves, defined as the ratio of electrostatic to electromagnetic fluctuations, has remained unmeasurable in fusion plasmas for decades, despite its pivotal role in understanding wave dynamics and their impact on plasmas. We report the first measurements of drift-Alfvén wave polarization in a hot, magnetically confined plasma. The breakthrough is enabled by a novel methodology developed from gyrokinetic theory, utilizing fluctuations of electron temperature and density.

It is a great physical challenge to achieve controlled nuclear fusion in magnetic confinement tokamak and solve energy shortage problem for decades. In tokamak plasma, large-scale plasma instability called disruption will halt power production of reactor and damage key components. Prediction and prevention of plasma disruption is extremely urgent and important.

Acoustic black hole is becoming an attractive topic in recent years, for it open-up new direction for experimental/observational explorations of black holes. In this work, the gravitational bending of acoustic Schwarzschild black hole is investigated. The gravitational deflection angle of particles traveling along null geodesics, weak gravitational lensing and Einstein ring for acoustic Schwarzschild black hole are carefully studied and analyzed.
