The nature of the charge carriers in 2D few-layer graphites (FLGs) has been recently questioned by transport measurements [K. S. Novoselov, Science 306, 666 (2004)10.1126/science.1102896] and a strong ambipolar electric field effect has been revealed. Our density functional calculations demonstrate that the electronic band dispersion near the Fermi level, and consequently the nature of the charge carriers, is highly sensitive to the number of layers and the stacking geometry. We show that the experimentally observed ambipolar transport is only possible for an FLG with a Bernal-like stacking pattern, whereas simple-carrier or semiconducting behavior is predicted for other geometries.

In light of the increasingly pressing energy and environmental challenges, the use of photocatalysis to convert solar energy into chemical energy has emerged as a promising solution. Halide perovskites have recently attracted considerable interest as photocatalysts due to their outstanding properties. Early developments focused on Lead-based perovskites, but their use has been severely restricted due to the toxicity of Lead.

Intervalence plasmons in boron-doped diamond.

Department of Nuclear, Plasma, and Radiological Engineering, The Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Champaign, IL, USA.

Doped semiconductors can exhibit metallic-like properties ranging from superconductivity to tunable localized surface plasmon resonances. Diamond is a wide-bandgap semiconductor that is rendered electronically active by incorporating a hole dopant, boron. While the effects of boron doping on the electronic band structure of diamond are well-studied, any link between charge carriers and plasmons has never been shown.

Selenium deficiency associated with a high risk of many diseases remains a global challenge. Owing to the narrow margin between "nutrition-toxicity" doses of selenium, it is imperative to achieve accurate selenium supplement. Nano‑selenium (SeNPs) is a novel form of selenium supplement with low toxicity, but it could be trapped and removed by intestinal mucus, thus limiting its oral delivery.

Red light emitting perovskite quantum dot (PQD) glass, with narrow-band emission and excellent stability, holds great potential for applications in liquid crystal displays. However, its low photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) remains the biggest obstacle limiting its practical application. Additionally, the mechanism behind the enhancement of the PLQY is not well understood, which restricts the further improvement of the PLQY in red light emitting PQD glass.

To date, III-V semiconductor-based tandem devices with GaInP top photoabsorbers show the highest solar-to-electricity or solar-to-fuel conversion efficiencies. In photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells, however, III-V semiconductors are sensitive, in terms of photochemical stability and, therefore, require suitable functional layers for electronic and chemical passivation. GaN films are discussed as promising options for this purpose.
