Emergence of coherence in complex networks of heterogeneous dynamical systems.

We present a general theory for the onset of coherence in collections of heterogeneous maps interacting via a complex connection network. Our method allows the dynamics of the individual uncoupled systems to be either chaotic or periodic, and applies generally to networks for which the number of connections per node is large. We find that the critical coupling strength at which a transition to synchrony takes place depends separately on the dynamics of the individual uncoupled systems and on the largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of the coupling network. Our theory directly generalizes the Kuramoto model of equal strength all-to-all coupled phase oscillators to the case of oscillators with more realistic dynamics coupled via a large heterogeneous network.

Objective: To assess the dynamic mandibular movement of patients with condylar hyperplasia before and after simultaneous orthognathic surgery and condylectomy through an intraoral approach.

Methods: Two groups of patients diagnosed with unilateral condylar hyperplasia were studied: the preoperative group consisted of 23 patients and the postoperative group consisted of 13 patients who had undergone simultaneous orthognathic surgery and condylectomy through an intraoral approach with follow-up for more than 1 year. The normal reference value was obtained from 11 individuals without oral and maxillofacial diseases.

The purpose of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of lung imaging using 3D electrical impedance tomography (EIT) during spontaneous breathing trials (SBTs) in patients with acute hypoxic respiratory failure. EIT is a noninvasive, nonionizing, real-time functional imaging technique, suitable for bedside monitoring in critically ill patients. EIT data were collected in 24 mechanically ventilated patients immediately preceding and during a SBT on two rows of 16 electrodes using a simultaneous multicurrent source EIT system for 3D imaging.

Background And Purpose: This study aims to investigate the longitudinal changes in translocator protein (TSPO) following stroke in different brain regions and potential associations with chronic brain infarction.

Methods: Twelve patients underwent SPECT using the TSPO tracer 6-Chloro-2-(4'-123I-Iodophenyl)-3-(N,N-Diethyl)-Imidazo[1,2-a]Pyridine-3-Acetamide, as well as structural MRI, at 10, 41, and 128 days (median) after ischemic infarction in the middle cerebral artery. TSPO expression was measured in lesional (MRI lesion and SPECT lesion), connected (pons and ipsilesional thalamus), and nonconnected (ipsilesional cerebellum and contralesional occipital cortex) regions.
