A systematic review of the presentation and management of prosthetic joint infection (PJI) due to zoonotic microorganisms, fungi, mycobacteria and other unusual microorganisms is not available. We therefore sought to provide a resource for the practicing orthopaedic surgeon which will serve as a guide for making appropriate decisions in managing such rare, but potentially problematic conditions. We conducted a Medline search of all case reports of PJI due to these unusual microorganisms. Our review of the current literature showed the diagnosis of PJI due to zoonotic microorganisms, fungi, mycobacteria and other unusual microorganisms typically necessitates specialized diagnostic tests. Maintaining a high index of suspicion in diagnosis of such unusual microorganisms and requesting the appropriate laboratory tests at the time of surgical débridement is crucial for determining the microbiologic etiology of these infections. The appropriate medical and surgical management of such infections is complex and often requires the use of special antimicrobials with which the orthopaedist may not be familiar. Collaboration with an infectious disease specialist is advisable when treating these infections.

In subsurface methanogenic ecosystems, the ubiquity of methylated-compound-using archaea-methylotrophic methanogens-implies that methylated compounds have an important role in the ecology and carbon cycling of such habitats. However, the origin of these chemicals remains unclear as there are no known energy metabolisms that generate methylated compounds de novo as a major product. Here we identified an energy metabolism in the subsurface-derived thermophilic anaerobe Zhaonella formicivorans that catalyses the conversion of formate to methanol, thereby producing methanol without requiring methylated compounds as an input.

Amyloids are protein fibrils with a characteristic cross-β structure that is responsible for the unusual resistance of amyloids to various physical and chemical factors, as well as numerous pathogenic and functional consequences of amyloidogenesis. The greatest diversity of functional amyloids was identified in bacteria. The majority of bacterial amyloids are involved in virulence and pathogenesis either via facilitating formation of biofilms and adaptation of bacteria to colonization of a host organism or through direct regulation of toxicity.

The discoveries of penicillin and streptomycin were pivotal for infection control with the knowledge subsequently being used to enable the discovery of many other antibiotics currently used in clinical practice. These valuable compounds are generally derived from mesophilic soil microorganisms, predominantly Streptomyces species. Unfortunately, problems with the replication of results suggested that this discovery strategy was no longer viable, motivating a switch to combinatorial chemistry in conjunction with existing screening programmes to derive new antimicrobials.
