Using histochemical, immunohistochemical and biochemical techniques, noradrenaline-, neuropeptide Y-, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide-, substance P- and calcitonin gene-related peptide-containing nerve fibres were studied in the uterine artery of virgin, progesterone-treated and pregnant guinea-pigs. Morphological changes following hormone treatment or in pregnancy were also evaluated in a quantitative study on semithin sections of the uterine artery. In late pregnancy, the number of noradrenaline-containing nerve fibres, which formed the densest plexus in virgin animals, was significantly decreased, a finding supported by a significant reduction in noradrenaline levels. This reduction was not mimicked by systemic progesterone treatment. In contrast, the innervation of the uterine artery by neuropeptide Y-containing nerve fibres was increased in pregnancy, while the other peptidergic nerves and peptide levels were unchanged after progesterone treatment and in pregnancy. These changes led to a predominance of innervation by neuropeptide Y- rather than noradrenaline-containing nerve fibres in late pregnancy. No morphological changes were detected following progesterone treatment, but pregnancy led to a marked increase in the cross-sectional area of the vessel accompanied by an increase in the thickness of the media.

: Although preeclampsia (PE) and small for gestational age (SGA) are known to come from impaired placentation during the first trimester, prior studies have focused mostly on Doppler findings in the second trimester. : In this retrospective pilot study, we enrolled 628 singleton pregnant women who underwent ultrasound in both the first and second trimesters and blood test. For SGA correlation, we further excluded 12 subjects with PE because PE may be the cause of SGA.

Background: The role of maternal cardiac and hemodynamic assessment during normal and complicated pregnancies has gained attention during the last few years. Some researchers suggested that the manifestation of complications in pregnancy suffering from impaired placentation is mainly driven by pre-existing cardiac changes, identifiable at an early stage by echocardiographic and hemodynamic assessment. It is therefore of great importance to determine the link between placental perfusion and maternal cardiac function and hemodynamics.

Methods: In this multicenter retrospective analysis of 359 patients, the surgical indices, the time taken for the serum human chorionic gonadotropin level to return to normal, the recovery time of menstruation, and the incidence of postoperative adverse reactions were comparatively analyzed. The clinical efficacies of various preoperative treatment methods to block the blood supply to CSP tissues and those of four different surgical methods to treat CSP, namely, curettage, hysteroscopic surgery, laparoscopic surgery, and vaginal surgery, were evaluated in this study.

Background: Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) is one of the leading preventable causes of maternal morbidity and mortality causing one-fourth of all maternal deaths. We aimed to study the role of uterine artery embolization (UAE) in controlling PPH and its impact on the need for hysterectomy.
Methods: We studied patients who were diagnosed with primary PPH between February 2012 and March 2020 at Al Ain Hospital, United Arab Emirates.

Background: Cesarean hysterectomy in the placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) remains challenging due to difficulty in controlling perioperative bleeding.
Purpose: To compare the effectiveness and safety of perioperative balloon occlusion with versus without pelvic artery embolization in PAS women who underwent a cesarean hysterectomy.
Material And Methods: A total of 26 pathological confirmed cases of PAS were retrospectively reviewed and categorized into two groups: perioperative balloon occlusion at either the anterior division of the internal iliac artery or uterine artery followed by gelfoam embolization (n = 12, study group) and perioperative balloon occlusion alone (n = 14, control group).
