Fields of a radially polarized Gaussian laser beam beyond the paraxial approximation.

Published: September 2006

Analytic expressions for the fields of a tightly focused radially polarized Gaussian laser beam are derived, accurate to epsilon5, where epsilon is the associated diffraction angle. The fields satisfy Maxwell's equations, and the calculated beam power based on them is significantly different from that of the paraxial-approximation fields.

IFITM2 Modulates Endocytosis Maintaining Neural Stem Cells in Developing Neocortex.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

Key Laboratory of Organ Regeneration and Reconstruction, Chinese Academy of Science, Beijing, 100101, China.

Brain development is orchestrated by a complex interplay of genetic and environmental signals, with endocytosis serving as a pivotal process in integrating extracellular cues. However, the specific role of endocytosis in neurogenesis remains unclear. We uncover a critical function of the interferon-induced transmembrane protein, IFITM2, essential for endocytic processes in radial glial cells (RGCs).

Alginate Beads Encapsulating Hydroxyapatite Microparticle and BMP-2 for Long Bone Defect Regeneration: A Pilot Study.

Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine and Research Institute for Veterinary Science, Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea;

Background/aim: Large bone defects caused by trauma, infection, tumor excision, and non-union fractures are challenging to treat. Mechanical stability, appropriate osteoconductive bone grafts, and osteoinductive growth factors are necessary for bone regeneration in long bone diaphyseal defects. This study aimed to investigate the efficiency of a hybrid bone scaffold formed using hydroxyapatite (HAp) and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-2-containing alginate beads, combined with a barrier membrane, in promoting new bone formation in a rabbit radial segmental defect model.

Synthesis of titania/activated carbon composites for the synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis of lindane in aqueous solutions.

Lindane (LIND) is an organochlorine pesticide, belonging to the persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which are bioaccumulative with detrimental effects on human health and environment. In the present work, activated carbon (AC) produced from coffee waste after activation with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and pyrolysis at 800 °C (CWAC-NaOH-800) is tested as adsorbent of LIND, and as substrate for the synthesis of hybrid adsorbent/photocatalytic materials of titanium oxide with activated carbon (TiO/AC) via the sol-gel method, aiming at the synergistic adsorption and photocatalysis of LIND. Three different TiO/AC materials were synthesized at mass ratio of TiO to AC equal to 2.

In all epithelial cells, the adherent junctions (AJs) with cadherin as the core play an important role in the maintenance of the connection and the formation of apical-basal polarity. The ependymal cells close to the ventricular system rely on AJs with N-cadherin at the core to maintain their normal morphology and function. Therefore, it has an important impact on the function and disease of the central nervous system.

Solvation plays a pivotal role in chemistry to effectively steer chemical reactions. While liquid water has been extensively studied, our molecular-level knowledge of other associated liquids capable of forming H-bond networks, such as liquid methanol, remains surprisingly scarce. We use large-scale ab initio molecular dynamics simulations to comprehensively study the structural, dynamical, and electronic properties of bulk methanol under ambient conditions.
