[AIDS and forensic medicine. I. The framework of the debate].

Clin Ter

Dipartimento di Antropologia ed Etica Applicata, Università Campus Biomedico, Roma, Italia.

Published: December 2006

The ethical debate regarding the AIDS is very rich both at the theoretical and practical level, but--unlike what it is happening for other sectors, e.g. the euthanasia--these two aspects are integrated, shaping a true interdisciplinary job of ethical evaluation, in which clinicians, medical examiners, ethicists, nurses, clinical psychologists, economists and politicians are met. The utilized methodology will be to identify the human act in the light of the patient's good and the common good of the society. These are strong references and broadly shared in general sense, but they become problematic if we want to identify, and we should have to do it, the contents of such "goods". The authors intend to appraise the quality of a Centre for Research and Healthcare for AIDS patients, also considering the "performance measures".

The detection of skeletal remains using human remain detection dogs (HRD) is often reported anecdotally by handlers to be a challenge. Limited studies have been conducted to determine the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from bones, particularly when there is limited organic matter remaining. This study aimed to determine the VOCs emitted from dry, weathered bones and examine the detection performance of HRD dogs on these bones when used as training aids.

Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) applications have elevated accomplishments in various scientific fields, primarily those that benefit the economy and society. Contemporary threats, such as armed conflicts, natural and man-made disasters, and illegal immigration, often require fast and innovative but reliable identification aids, in which forensic anthropology has a significant role. However, forensic anthropology has not yet exploited new scientific advances but instead relies on traditionally used methods.

Granulomas, organized aggregates of immune cells which form in response to (), are characteristic but not exclusive of tuberculosis (TB). Despite existing investigations on TB granulomas, the determinants that differentiate host-protective granulomas from granulomas that contribute to TB pathogenesis are often disputed. Thus, the goal of this narrative review is to help clarify the existing literature on such determinants.

Characterizing stutter in single cells and the impact on multi-cell analysis.

Forensic Sci Int Genet

Forensic & National Security Sciences Institute, Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Short tandem repeat analysis is a robust and reliable DNA analysis technique that aids in source identification of a biological sample. However, the interpretation, particularly when DNA mixtures are present at low levels, can be complicated by the presence of PCR artifacts most commonly referred to as stutter. The presence of stutter products can increase the difficulty of interpretation in DNA mixtures as well as low-level DNA samples down to a single cell.
