Laws, causation, and explanation in the special sciences. | LitMetric

Laws, causation, and explanation in the special sciences.

Hist Philos Life Sci

Department of Philosophy, Brown University, Providence, RI 02912, USA.

Published: October 2006

There is the general philosophical question concerning the relationship between physics, which is often taken to be our fundamental and all-encompassing science, on one hand and the special sciences, such as biology and psychology, each of which deals with phenomena in some specially restricted domain, on the other. This paper deals with a narrower question: Are there laws in the special sciences, laws like those we find, or expect to find, in basic physics? Three arguments that are intended to show that there are no such laws are presented and examined. The paper ends with brief remarks concerning the implications of these arguments for explanation and causation in the special sciences.

Introduction: Prostate cancer represents a significant oncological challenge, with its natural history predominantly driven by androgen receptor (AR) signaling. The pivotal role of this pathway underscores the rationale for targeting AR activity in therapeutic strategies. However, the development of resistance mechanisms has highlighted the need for advanced therapies to address the complexity of the castration-resistant status.

Upper limb spasticity is a common and serious sequelae in patients with hemiplegia after stroke. Radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (rESWT) can improve upper limb dysfunction and relieve pain in patients, However, its efficacy as a single treatment is limited. In traditional Chinese medicine, Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) is the main pharmacological component of Ligusticum chuanxiong.

is one of the most abundant and important butyrate-producing human gut anaerobic bacteria that plays an important role in maintaining health and is a potential next-generation probiotic. We investigated the pangenome of 16 distinct strains, isolated over several decades, identifying local and time-specific adaptations. More than 50% of the genes in each individual strain were assigned to the core genome, and 77% of the cloud genes were unique to individual strains, revealing the high level of genome conservation.

Preparation of Hybrid Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Based on 3-Triethoxysilylpropyl Methacrylic Amide for Solid-Phase Extraction of Gatifloxacin From Lake Water.

Tianjin Key Laboratory on Technologies Enabling Development of Clinical Therapeutics and Diagnostics, School of Pharmacy, Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin, People's Republic of China.

A novel molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) against gatifloxacin based on a hybrid monomer (3-triethoxysilylpropyl methacrylic amide, APTES-MAA) was reported. In this study, the imprinted monolith was synthesized with gatifloxacin as template, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as cross-linker, and APTES-MAA as functional monomer in a mixture of acetonitrile and isooctane as porogen via an optimization based on density functional theory (DFT). The polymers were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and mercury porosimetry.

Decoding genetic diversity through genome engineering in bryophytes.

March 2025

Shenzhen Branch, Guangdong Laboratory for Lingnan Modern Agriculture, Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Agricultural Synthetic Biology, Genome Analysis Laboratory of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Agricultural Genomics Institute at Shenzhen, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Shenzhen, 518124, China.

Bryophytes, which include mosses, liverworts, and hornworts, have evolved a highly successful strategy for thriving in terrestrial environments, allowing them to occupy nearly every land ecosystem. Their success is due to a unique combination of biochemical adaptations, diverse structural forms, and specialized life cycle strategies. The key to their evolutionary success lies in their genomic diversity.
