Despite its generally poor catalytic properties, bulk gold metal is observed to catalyze reactions of isocyanides (CN-R) with primary amines (H2N-R') and O2 to give carbodiimides (R-N=C=N-R') at room temperature and above. Detailed infrared reflection absorption spectroscopic (IRRAS) and kinetic studies show that the reaction occurs by initial eta1-adsorption of the isocyanide on the Au surface, which activates the isocyanide to attack by the amine. This attack is the rate-determining step in the catalytic cycle and has characteristics very similar to those of amine reactions with coordinated isocyanides in transition metal complexes. However, the metallic Au surface provides a pathway involving O2 to give the carbodiimide product whereas homogeneous metal ion catalysts give formamidines [HC(=NR)(NHR')].

As an indispensable member of the reticular material family, metal-carbon-based organometallic frameworks (OMFs) remain largely underexplored, and no chiral OMFs (COMFs) have been reported thus far. Herein, we first report the construction of COMFs from a Pd-isocyanide OMF via nucleophilic addition to the Pd-isocyanide moiety with optically pure amines. The obtained Pd-bis(acyclic diaminocarbene) (Pd-BADC)-derived chiral OMFs display excellent applicability and can be reusable chiral catalysts to highly promote asymmetric Strecker and Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions in a heterogeneous way.

1,4-Dibenzodiazepines, an important component of nitrogen-containing heterocycles, are widely present in drugs. Herein, we developed a photochemical radical cascade cyclization reaction of isocyanides with α-carbonyl bromides under mild conditions. A sequence of 11-alkyl-substituted 1,4-dibenzodiazepines were produced in 53%-85% yields, demonstrating excellent tolerance towards various functional groups.

The salt metathesis reaction involving a diamine-based antimony chloride precursor with sodium arsaethynolate in the presence of PMe leads to the formation of stibanyl-functionalized PMe-arsinidene (). Detailed analyses through single-crystal X-ray diffraction and density functional theory of confirm the presence of covalent Sb-As bonds and reveal its polarized nature with a multiple-bond character. In contrast to the formation of complex , substituting PMe with xylyl isocyanide or 1,3-diisopropyl-4,5-dimethyl-imidazolin-2-ylidene () produces an isocyanide-arsinidene adduct () and an -arsaketene complex (), respectively.

Passerini reaction was advantageously exploited to hydrophobize carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and alginates (ALG) by employing various hydrophobic aldehydes and isocyanides. The Passerini reaction, carried out in ecofriendly conditions, allowed to design never described twofold hydrophobized polysaccharide derivatives via the covalent grafting of two hydrophobic moieties. The modified CMC and ALG products were in-depth characterized to guaranty the success of the modification and to calculate the degrees of substitution (DS).

The exploration of main group compounds with multiple bonds has significantly enhanced our understanding of chemical bonding and expanded transition-metal-free bond activation and catalysis. Diborynes, characterized by a boron-boron triple bond (B≡B), represent a particularly challenging area due to boron's limited valence electrons. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a silylene-stabilized diboryne (), expanding the frontier of diboryne stabilization.
