Article Synopsis
  • Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are revolutionizing the analysis of geospatial and Earth observation data, particularly in pixel-level classification tasks.
  • The newly introduced geodl R package enables deep learning applications in R for geospatial data without requiring Python integration, simplifying the user experience.
  • geodl efficiently processes raster-based data using the terra package and includes features for creating raster masks, training models, and assessing performance with common metrics.

The state-of-the-art in the theory of self-organized criticality reveals that a certain inactivity precedes extreme events, which are located on the tail of the event probability distribution with respect to their sizes. The existence of the inactivity allows for the prediction of these events in advance. In this work, we explore the predictability of the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld (BTW) and Manna models on the square lattice as a function of the lattice length.

Peatland organic matter quality varies with latitude as suggested by combination of FTIR and Ramped Pyrolysis Oxidation.

November 2024

Geology and Geophysics, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, MA, United States of America.

We employed two compelling and distinct methods, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Ramped Pyrolysis Oxidation (Ramped PyrOx), to examine the quality of organic matter (OM) stored in four peatlands located along a latitudinal gradient (Tropical (4˚N), Subtropical (27˚N), Boreal (48˚N), and Polar (68˚N)). FTIR was used to quantify the relative abundance of carbohydrates, a relatively labile compound class, and aromatics, which are more recalcitrant, in a sample set of four peat cores. These samples were then prepared using Ramped PyrOx, a second, independent method of determining OM quality that mimics the natural diagenetic maturation of OM that would take place over long timescales.

The oligotrophic Adriatic Sea is characterized during a typical summer by low productivity caused by strong water column stratification, which inhibits vertical mixing and nutrient supply to the euphotic zone. These conditions can be disrupted by transient physical forcing, which enhances nutrient fluxes and creates localized hotspots of relatively high net primary production. In this study, plankton abundance and diversity were investigated in relation to the physical forcing and nutrient concentrations in an area affected by island-trapped waves (ITWs) near Lastovo Island (Adriatic Sea).

The West Coast New Area is a typical city in China where water supply is predominantly sourced from reservoirs. Heavy metal pollution in these reservoirs directly impacts the safety of drinking water and human health. Therefore, this study comprehensively evaluated the status of heavy metal pollution in the water environment and sediment of the main water supply reservoir in the study area, revealing the interaction relationship and pollution sources, as well as assessing the probabilistic health risks to human beings.
