[Giant vascular tumour in an adult: tufted angioma or kaposiform hemangioendothelioma].

Ann Dermatol Venereol

Service de Dermatologie, Hôpital La Timone, Marseille.

Published: October 2006

Introduction: Tufted angioma and kaposiform hemangioendothelioma are two rare benign but aggressive vascular tumours that occur mainly in children.

Observation: A 72 year-old man consulted for a 50 cm wide vascular tumour of the right shoulder which was increasing for 10 years. On histological examination there were features of tufted angioma and kaposiform hemangioendothelioma.

Discussion: The tumour of this patient was atypical because of its big size never described before. The histological association of aspects which could correspond to tufted angioma and kaposiform hemangioendothelioma seems to confirm recent publications which support the hypothesis that these two tumours are two evolutive stages of one and only entity.

Article Synopsis
  • A lecture titled "Anticoagulation and Vascular Anomalies" was held at the ISTH Congress in 2023, discussing the management of vascular anomalies which are categorized as tumors or malformations.
  • Some vascular tumors and malformations may lead to coagulation issues, but anticoagulation is generally not the standard treatment for these conditions, except for specific cases.
  • Slow-flow vascular malformations carry a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and in these cases, anticoagulation may be necessary to mitigate risks and manage symptoms, with new data on these subjects presented at the conference.
