The effect of periodontitis on biting abilities.

J Periodontol

Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, Erciyes University, Kayseri, Turkey.

Published: August 2006

Background: The aim of this study was to compare the biting abilities (bite force [BF] and occlusal contact area [OCA]) of chronic periodontitis patients with those of control patients with healthy periodontia by using pressure-sensitive sheets.

Methods: The study population consisted of 20 patients with chronic periodontitis whose initial periodontal therapy was completed and 20 control subjects with healthy periodontia. Periodontitis was diagnosed by radiographs and measurements of probing depth and clinical attachment level. Pressure-sensitive sheets were used for the quantitative analysis of BF and OCA.

Results: Both mean BF and OCA values were greater in the healthy control group compared to those of the study group. The differences between the groups were statistically significant at the 95% confidence level.

Conclusion: Reduced periodontal support in the absence of inflammation negatively affected biting abilities.

The onset, progression, and severity of pain following rattlesnake envenomation are highly variable between patients. Pain can be severe and persistent, seemingly refractory to opioid analgesics. The ability of antivenom to directly relieve pain has not been well studied.

Introduction: The black widow spider, , stands out as one of the most medically significant arachnids due to its extensive geographic distribution in the United States and its ability to produce a potent neurotoxin, α-latrotoxin. This study aimed to describe the epidemiology of black widow spider exposures by month of exposure, geographic distribution, demographics, symptoms, treatment, and health system resource utilization between 2012 and 2022.

Methods: This was a retrospective observational study using the US National Poison Data System, the data warehouse of the 55 US poison centers.

Objectives: To evaluate the changes in nutritional status, chewing ability and oral health-related quality of life in edentulous individuals who have initially been rehabilitated with immediate complete dentures (CD) which are then transformed to implant-supported overdentures (IOD) after a period of osseointegration.

Background: Compared to those with conventional dentures, individuals with IODs exhibit improved patient-reported outcomes, chewing capacity and biting force. While prior research highlights differences in nutritional markers between these groups, there is limited investigation into intra-individual changes in nutritional status, chewing ability and oral health-related quality of life during the transition from CDs to IODs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Kissing bugs are effective blood-feeders, using cues like carbon dioxide and heat to locate their warm-blooded hosts, but recent studies show they may also feed on cold-blooded animals and insects.
  • - The bugs utilize various sensory signals, such as temperature changes and odors, for feeding decisions, and are now found to consume plant or fruit fluids, indicating a more diverse diet than previously thought.
  • - Future research should explore how kissing bugs sense and react to different sensory inputs from various hosts and plant sources, which could inform strategies for surveillance and control, as well as shed light on their evolutionary transition from predatory to blood-feeding behavior.
