This review covers the concise synthesis of simple coumarin with salicyl aldehydes and Wittig reagent, and a convenient synthesis of polycyclic aromatic heterocyclic compounds using the aryl-aryl coupling reaction of aryl benzamides and aryl benzoates with a Pd reagent is presented. In the first section, the reactions of salicyl aldehydes with OMe, OH, Br, CO(2)Me, and NO(2) groups with carbethoxymethylenetriphenylphophorane are described. Specifically, the reaction of 3-nitrosalicylaldehyde with amines gave benzoxazoles in moderate yield. In the second section, the syntheses of benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids, quinazoline alkaloids, and graphislactones in the Pd-mediated biaryl coupling reaction are described. Moreover, the synthesis of benzonaphthazepine and pyrrolophenanthridine alkaloids utilizing regioselective C-H activation with intramolecular coordination of a benzylamine to Pd is described, and the effects of oxygen substituents in the benzoyl part of benzanilides on the coupling position in its biaryl coupling reaction are presented. An effective Pd reagent for the coupling reaction of aryl tolyflate and arene was developed.

In the past few years, the direct activation of organohalides by ligated boryl radicals has emerged as a potential synthetic tool for cross-coupling reactions. In most existing methods, ligated boryl radicals are accessed from NHC-boranes or amine-boranes. In this work, we report a new photocatalytic platform by modular assembly of readily available amines and diboron esters to access a library of ligated boryl radicals for reaction screening, thus enabling the cross-coupling of organohalides and alkenes including both activated and unactivated ones for C(sp)-C(sp) bond formation by using the assembly of DABCO A1 and BNepB1.

The direct conversion of dinitrogen to nitrate is a dream reaction to combine the Haber-Bosch and Ostwald processes as well as steam reforming using electrochemistry in a single process. Regrettably, the corresponding nitrogen oxidation (NOR) reaction is hampered by a selectivity problem, since the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is both thermodynamically and kinetically favored in the same potential range. This opens the search for the identification of active and selective NOR catalysts to enable nitrate production under anodic reaction conditions.

An efficient Suzuki cross-coupling reaction under continuous flow conditions was developed utilizing an immobilized solid supported catalyst consisting of bimetallic nickel-palladium nanoparticles (Ni-Pd/MWCNTs). In this process, the reactants can be continuously pumped into a catalyst bed at a high flow rate of 0.6 mL/min and the temperature of 130 °C while the Suzuki products are recovered in high steady-state yields for prolonged continuous processing.
