Published: August 2006

We studied the 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of benzonitrile oxide to N-ethylmaleimide in AOT/isooctane/water microemulsions at 25.0 degrees C and found the reaction rate to be roughly 150 and 35 times greater than that in isooctane and pure water, respectively. The accelerating effect of the microemulsion is the combined result of an increase in the local concentrations of the reactants through incorporation into the interface and of the intrinsic rate of the process through electrostatic interactions with the headgroups in the surfactant.

A new ratiometric and colorimetric fluorescent probe HTD was synthesized based on the reaction of 4-aminophenyl boronic acid pinacol ester and 4-(3-formyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) benzonitrile. The probe exhibited a unique fluorescence response to hypochlorous acid and had good anti-interference performance in the presence of other interference. When HTD met the NaClO, the light orange fluorescence was changed to green with the blue-shifted emission wavelength from 550 to 500 nm.

N-participated lignin depolymerization is of great importance for the transformation of waste lignin into value-added chemicals. The vast majority of developed strategies employ organic amines as nitrogen source, and considerable methods rely on excessive use of strong base, which suffers severe environmental issues. Herein, benzonitrile derivatives are synthesized from oxidized lignin β-O-4 model compounds in the presence of solid nitrogen source (NH)CO under mild, base-free conditions over commercially available copper catalyst.

The molecular chemistry of metal-metal bonds is crucial for understanding the bonding and reactivity of metal-containing molecules as well as solid metals and their alloys, especially with respect to their application as catalysts for organic transformations and industrial processes. Despite the high efficiency of the recently developed nucleophilic alumanyl anions in the synthesis of diverse Al-metal bonds, the bonding between main group metals in a low oxidation state and the Al atom remains largely unexplored. This paper describes the reaction of an alumanyl anion with a chlorostannylene precursor to afford a compound with an unprecedented covalent Al-Sn bond.

Anisotropic nanostructures dispersed in nematic liquid crystal, 4-(-4'-pentylcyclohexyl)-benzonitrile (PCH5), tend to improve the properties of host nematic liquid crystal owing to its structure and strong dipolar interactions. The experimental investigations of such composite systems are intriguing as well as challenging. Here, we have presented a systematic experimental study of effect of incorporation of two-dimensional anisotropic nanostructure, , nanodisc on properties of room temperature nematic liquid crystal.
