A new family of pi-conjugated delocalized biradical compound is developed. The solution of 1,4-bis(2,5-diphenylimidazol-4-ylidene)cyclohexa-2,5-diene shows the ESR signal consisting of a moderately broad unresolved line, Delta H(pp) approximately 1 mT, at room temperature. The presence of the thermal equilibrium between a triplet biradical state and a singlet state is confirmed by the ESR measurements, and the spin concentration is determined as 7.90 x 10(21) spin/mol at 300 K. The spin concentration can also be controlled by modifying the molecular planarity. Moreover, the unrestricted DFT/B3LYP calculations suggest the biradical character of the singlet ground state, and the modulation of the energy gap between the singlet state and the triplet state is investigated from the theoretical point of view. Controlling the equilibrium between a diamagnetic state and a paramagnetic state will provide significant progress in the field of biradical chemistry, and the materials with the biradical character in a ground state will lead to a novel development of molecular-based organic magnets.

Implanting heteroatoms into organic π-conjugated molecules (OCMS) offered a great opportunity to fine-tune the chemical structures and optoelectronic properties. This work describes a new family of 1,4-azaphosphinines with extended σ-π hyperconjugations. The photophysical studies revealed that azaphosphinines exhibited narrow-band thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) ( full width at half-maximum: 26-40 nm).

Unusual Thermo-Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation in Organic Configurationally-Locked Polyene Crystals.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Structure Chemistry, Fujian Institute of Research on the Structure of Matter, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Fuzhou, Fujian, 350002, P. R. China.

To modulate nonlinear optical (NLO) effects of crystalline material holds great application potential in the photoelectronic and optical fields. Organic configurationally-locked polyene represents an exciting NLO family with large second harmonic generation (SHG) effects, whereas it is a huge blank to switch and modulate their NLO property through external stimuli. For the first time, here present unusual thermo-enhanced SHG activities are presented in a polyene-based NLO compound, 2-{3-[2-(4-pyrrolidinphenyl)vinyl]-5,5-dimethylcyclohex-2-enylidene}malononitrile (1), giving a record-high magnitude of SHG enhancement up to ≈170% during its isomorphic phase transition.

Catching the π-Stacks: Prediction of Aggregate Structures of Porphyrin.

J Phys Chem A

Institute of Physical Chemistry, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Helmholtzweg 4, 07743 Jena, Germany.

π-π interactions decisively shape the supramolecular structure and functionality of π-conjugated molecular semiconductor materials. Despite the customizable molecular building blocks, predicting their supramolecular structure remains a challenge. Traditionally, force field methods have been used due to the complexity of these structures, but advances in computational power have enabled ab initio approaches such as density functional theory (DFT).

Syntheses, structures and properties of two new members of the pentaborate family: NaKBO(OH)·HO and KBO·2HO.

Two new members of the pentaborate family, NaKBO(OH)·HO (I) and KBO·2HO (II), were successfully synthesized, which crystallize in the space groups of 1̄ and , respectively. In compound I, [BO(OH)] fundamental building blocks (FBBs) form a two-dimensional (2D) [BO(OH)] layer through corner-sharing, whereas in compound II, [BO] FBBs form two independent interpenetrating 3D [BO] networks by sharing common O atoms. The UV-vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum and first-principles calculations suggest that the two compounds possess deep-ultraviolet (DUV) transparency windows.

To date, the use of corannulene has been restricted in the area of material science, but its application in biomedical research has yet to be established due to its nonsolubility in an aqueous environment and synthetic infeasibility. Herein, we detail the development of a new family of highly curved π-conjugated corannulene-containing unnatural α-amino acid (CAA) derivatives to overcome this challenge. These CAAs have been extended as novel constituents for the synthesis of corannulene-containing water-soluble cationic peptides (CCPs), which display inhibitory activity against broad-spectrum pathogenic bacteria along with drug-resistant bacteria via a membrane-damaging mechanism.
