Low back pain (LBP) is associated with the degeneration of human intervertebral discs (IVDs). Despite progress in the treatment of LBP through spinal fusion, some cases still end in non-fusion after the removal of the affected IVD tissue. In this study, we investigated the hypothesis that the remaining IVD cells secrete BMP inhibitors that are sufficient to inhibit osteogenesis in autologous osteoblasts (OBs) and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs).

How head patterning is regulated in vertebrates is yet to be understood. In this study, we show that frog embryos injected with Noggin at different blastula and gastrula stages had their head development sequentially arrested at different positions. When timed BMP inhibition was applied to BMP-overexpressing embryos, the expression of five genes: (a marker of the cement gland, which is the front-most structure in the frog embryo), (a forebrain marker), (a forebrain and mid-brain marker), (an anterior hindbrain marker), and (a posterior hindbrain marker) were sequentially fixed.

Herein, we review a unique and versatile lineage composed of Myo/Nog cells that may be beneficial or detrimental depending on their environment and nature of the pathological stimuli they are exposed to. While we will focus on the lens, related Myo/Nog cell behaviors and functions in other tissues are integrated into the narrative of our research that spans over three decades, examines multiple species and progresses from early stages of embryonic development to aging adults. Myo/Nog cells were discovered in the embryonic epiblast by their co-expression of the skeletal muscle-specific transcription factor MyoD, the bone morphogenetic protein inhibitor Noggin and brain-specific angiogenesis inhibitor 1.

Background: The detailed molecular mechanism between type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and colorectal cancer (CRC) is still uncertain. Bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) dysregulation is implicated in T2DM and CRC, respectively. This study aims to investigate whether BMP4 can mediate the interaction of CRC with T2DM.

Objective: Bone morphogenetic protein 6 (BMP6) and noggin both have been implicated in the pathophysiology of chronic dementia, and chronic schizophrenia (SCZ) has high risk for progressing to dementia in later life. The current study investigated the relationship between blood BMP6/noggin levels and cognitive function in chronic SCZ elderly.
Methods: A total of 159 chronic SCZ elderly and 171 community normal controls (NC) were involved in the present study.
