Published: September 2006

Aim: To show the results of intravitreal application of triamcinolone used as a primary or adjuvant therapy.

Patients And Methods: We analyzed 48 patients with different ocular disorders: exudative age related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or central retinal vein occlusion. We analyzed color fundus photography, visual acuity, fluorescein angiography and complications of intravitreal triamcinolone application.

Results: There was a marked reduction of macular edema in 70% of patients verified on fluorescein angiography. Visual acuity improved in 62% of patients. The most common complication was transient rise in intraocular pressure. There was no case of endophthalmitis.

Conclusion: Intravitreal application of triamcinolone is relatively safe and efficacious in selected patiens with different ocular disorders.

Purpose: Intravitreal bevacizumab has been utilized to mitigate radiation retinopathy, yet the potential role of intravitreal melatonin for its prevention remains unexplored. This study aims to evaluate and compare the efficacy of intravitreal melatonin and bevacizumab in preventing radiation retinopathy in an experimental animal model.

Materials And Methods: Twelve healthy male New Zealand white rabbits ( = 24 eyes) received a single 3000 cGy irradiation dose in both eyes.

The lack of effective therapies for visual restoration in Retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration has led to the development of new strategies, such as optogenetics and retinal prostheses. However, visual restoration is poor due to the massive light-evoked activation of retinal neurons, regardless of the segregation of visual information in ON and OFF channels, which is essential for contrast sensitivity and spatial resolution. Here, we show that Ziapin2, a membrane photoswitch that modulates neuronal capacitance and excitability in a light-dependent manner, is capable of reinstating, in mouse and rat genetic models of photoreceptor degeneration, brisk and sluggish ON, OFF, and ON-OFF responses in retinal ganglion cells evoked by full-field stimuli, with reactivation of their excitatory and inhibitory conductances.

The special structure of eyes and the existence of various physiological barriers make ocular drug delivery one of the most difficult problems in the pharmaceutical field. Considering the problems of patient compliance, local administration remains the preferred method of drug administration in the anterior part of eyes. However, local administration suffers from poor bioavailability, need for frequent administration, and systemic toxicity.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of dexamethasone implantation in the supraciliary (SC) space, a novel and potential effective implantation site, compared to intravitreal (IV) application.

Methods: This prospective study included 39 eyes of 38 patients with macular oedema (ME) who underwent SC and IV dexamethasone implantation (SC-DEX and IV-DEX). Patients were randomly assigned to treatment groups and followed for 3 months.

: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of low vision and legal blindness in adults in developed countries. Wet AMD can be successfully treated using vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors; however, dry AMD currently has no effective treatment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficacy of intraocular injection of plasma rich in growth factors (PRGF) in an AMD mouse model induced by intraperitoneal administration of sodium iodate.
