[Structure: see text] The versatility of supramolecular chemistry has been exploited in constructing nanovalves based on mesoporous silica MCM-41 and the mutual recognition between secondary dialkylammonium ions and dibenzo[24]crown-8 (DB24C8). Naphthalene-containing dialkylammonium threads were tethered to the MCM-41, followed by loading with coumarin 460 and capping with DB24C8. Controlled release of coumarin 460 from the pores of MCM-41 was demonstrated using different bases. The rate of release of coumarin 460 from the nanovalves depends on the size of the base.

Despite significant advancements in the structural flexibility and functional diversity of fluorescent molecular sensors, the chromophores often require complex synthetic processes and are typically designed to perform only a specific function. Herein, we have demonstrated the unique features of fluorophores based on a fused coumarin-indole scaffold, which are synthetically available via a one-step reaction. Four fluorophores (ICH, ICEst, ICOMe, and ICNMe2) with varying substituents were synthesized and characterized.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a medical treatment that kills target cells through reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by photosensitizers (PS) and surrounding oxygen under the stimulus of light. Despite of its popularity in cancer treatment, PDT relys on oxygen and therefore suffers from long response time and low efficiency under low-oxygen situations such as tumor hypoxia. Herein, to improve the usage of oxygen and increase ROS yield, we synthesized six potential PSs termed DC-O, DC-S, DC-BrO, DC-BrS, DC-IO, and DC-IS, by modifying coumarins with thiocarbonyl and bromine/iodine.
