A method is developed for simplifying molecular interpretations of nonlinear optical phenomena. General sum-over-states expressions derived from perturbation theory can be written identically and self-consistently as simple products of lower-order effects. Electric dipole-allowed expressions for the nonlinear polarizability reduce to straightforward formulas directly connected to intuitive molecular properties without sacrificing mathematical rigor. This approach is sufficiently general to allow its application in treating electronic, vibrational, and vibronic interactions for both parametric (passive) processes (e.g., wave-mixing spectroscopies, sum- and difference-frequency generation, harmonic generation, etc.) and nonparametric (active) processes (e.g., hyper-Raman spectroscopy, multiphoton absorption, etc.). Explicit examples for sum-frequency generation and for four-wave mixing provide a convenient context for interpreting higher order nonlinear optical processes.

The nonlinear optical response in graphene is finding increasing applications in nanophotonic devices. The activation and enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) in graphene, which is generally forbidden in monolayer and AB-stacked bilayer graphene due to their centrosymmetry, is of urgent need for nanophotonic applications. Here, we present a comprehensive study of SHG performance of twisted multilayer graphene structures based on stacking engineering.

Differently substituted pyrrole-azo‑benzene molecular photoswitches were prepared in a straightforward synthetic way. Their fundamental properties were investigated by XRD analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, cyclic voltammetry, UV‑Vis absorption spectroscopy, Hyper-Rayleigh Scattering, and NMR spectroscopy; the experimental results were further corroborated by DFT calculations. Thermal robustness, the HOMO/LUMO levels, and the absorption properties were altered mostly by substituting the N‑methylpyrrole moiety and further fine-tuned by modifying the benzene substituents.

This study offers a comprehensive analysis of the Perturbed Schrödinger -Hirota Equation (PSHE), crucial for understanding soliton dynamics in modern optical communication systems. We extended the traditional Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLSE) to include higher-order nonlinearities and spatiotemporal dispersion, capturing the complexities of light pulse propagation. Employing the modified auxiliary equation method and Adomian Decomposition Method (ADM), we derived a spectrum of exact traveling wave solutions, encompassing exponential, rational, trigonometric, and hyperbolic functions.

The association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and visual impairment remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the DII and non-refractive visual impairment among US populations. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2008, including dietary information and visual impairment assessment.

Biosensors operating in the terahertz (THz) region are gaining substantial interest in biomedical analysis due to their significant potential for high-sensitivity trace-amount solution detection. However, progress in compact, high-sensitivity chips and methods for simple, rapid and trace-level measurements is limited by the spatial resolution of THz waves and their strong absorption in polar solvents. In this work, a compact nonlinear optical crystal (NLOC)-based reflective THz biosensor with a few arrays of asymmetrical meta-atoms was developed.
