Flutamide in the treatment of hirsutism.

Int J Gynaecol Obstet

Prima Clinica Ostetrico-Ginecologica, Universitá degli Studi, Milano, Italy.

Published: October 1991

Ten hirsute women were treated with flutamide (250 mg/day) for 6 months to evaluate its effect. Hair growth as assessed by the Ferriman and Gallwey hair score was significantly reduced in all patients (P less than 0.01). The only significant change in endocrine levels was an increase in serum androstenedione (P less than 0.01). Acne and seborrhea improved markedly. No side effects were noted during the treatment. Our data suggest that the antiandrogenic properties of flutamide render it a suitable single agent in the treatment of hirsutism.

Introduction: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a heterogeneous endocrinal physiological disorder characterized by chronic oligo-ovulation or an-ovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic morphology in ovaries on transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound. Hyperandrogenism and insulin resistance are already well-documented pathophysiological mechanisms in PCOS. Besides this, autoimmunity has been hypothesized in its pathogenesis.

The main clinical manifestations include irregular menstrual cycle, small cysts on one or both ovaries, chronic oligo-anovulation, and hirsutism. The etiological criteria are very complex and related to many factors like obesity, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, hyperandrogenism, diabetes mellitus type II, cardiovascular diseases, and dysbiosis of gut microbiota.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a heterogeneous endocrine disorder characterized by ovarian cysts, anovulation, endocrine variations, which includes oligo-amenorrhea along with associated subfertility and hyperandrogenism manifested as acne, hirsutism, and male-pattern alopecia. Coumarins are fused benzene and pyrone ring systems that exhibit a wide spectrum of bioactivities. This study aimed to investigate the effects of 3-acetyl coumarin (3-AC) on polycystic ovarian syndrome in female rats.
