Heyde syndrome is a triad of aortic stenosis (AS), gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding from angiodysplasia, and acquired von Willebrand disease (vWD). It is hypothesized that stenotic aortic valves cleave von Willebrand factor (vWF) multimers, predisposing patients to bleeding from GI angiodysplasias. This hypothesis is supported by the observation that aortic valve replacement often leads to the resolution of GI bleeding.

Introduction: Most studies have shown a declining incidence of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGIB) in recent years. Data regarding mortality were controversial; in non-variceal bleeding, the increasing age of the population, increased use of anti-thrombotic and anticoagulant therapy in patients with cardiovascular diseases, and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are counterbalanced by the progress in endoscopic therapy with stable mortality.

Material And Method: We performed a retrospective, cross-sectional study that included patients admitted with UGIB in Clinical Emergency Hospital Craiova during 2013-2020.

Upper gastrointestinal angiodysplasia (UGIA) is a unique mucosal vascular lesion that causes acute or recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding. Despite the increasing incidence of UGIA, the risk factors for bleeding in this condition remain unclear. We investigated the predictors of active and recurrent bleeding among patients with UGIA.

Toward automated small bowel capsule endoscopy reporting using a summarizing machine learning algorithm: The SUM UP study.

Clin Res Hepatol Gastroenterol

November 2024

Équipes Traitement de l'Information et Systèmes, ETIS UMR 8051, CY Paris Cergy University, ENSEA, CNRS, 95000 Cergy, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Deep learning (DL) algorithms effectively detect vascular lesions in small bowel capsule endoscopy (CE), improving diagnostic performance and reducing reading time.
  • A machine learning (ML) classifier was used to enhance the DL algorithm's performance by categorizing vascular abnormalities and selecting the most relevant images for reporting.
  • The random forest (RF) method achieved high specificity (91.1%) and accuracy (84.2%) in distinguishing significant lesions while dramatically reducing the number of images reported, demonstrating potential for automated CE reporting without sacrificing diagnostic quality.

Gastrointestinal Bleeding/Angiodysplasia in Patients With Glanzmann Thrombasthenia.

J Med Cases

December 2024

Madinah Hereditary Blood Disorders Centre, Department of Hematology and Oncology, King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Medical City, Madinah, Saudi Arabia.

Article Synopsis
  • * A rare complication of GT is gastrointestinal angiodysplasia (GIAD), which involves abnormal blood vessel formation in the digestive system and has been documented in eight cases.
  • * Treatment options for GIAD include surgical methods, electrocoagulation, and medications, but it has a high chance of recurring, as demonstrated in reported cases of patients with both GT and gastrointestinal bleeding.
