Genomic comparison between and and analysis of peptide-based biomarkers for serodiagnosis.

Front Vet Sci

Laboratory of Veterinary Bacteriology, Department of Animal Infectious Diseases, Sciensano, Brussels, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research identified 80 genes with presence-absence variation and focused on those related to virulence that might serve as potential antigens, narrowing it down to 28 proteins for further analysis.
  • * The study successfully identified 157 B-cell epitope-based peptides that could potentially help differentiate between the two species in serological tests, although further validation is needed.

Canine mycobacterial disease was first recognised over 100 years ago but is now an emerging concern. All reported cases of tuberculous disease in dogs have been caused by infection with one of three Mycobacterium tuberculosis-complex (MTBC) organisms (M. tuberculosis, Mycobacterium bovis, and Mycobacterium microti).

Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculosis (TB) is a major global health challenge, particularly due to the rise of drug-resistant strains, necessitating detailed monitoring of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in regions like Western Kenya.
  • The study aimed to assess the types, strains, and genetic variations of MTBC in HIV/AIDS-affected areas by examining clinical isolates from the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital collected between 2013-2014.
  • Results indicated a variety of MTBC strains present in Western Kenya, revealing a clustering of strains and emphasizing the need for heightened awareness and better surveillance methods among healthcare providers regarding these diverse MTBC strains.

Canine tuberculosis: A review of 18 new and 565 previously reported confirmed cases.

Vet J

April 2024

Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies and The Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh, Easter Bush Campus, Midlothian, EH25 9RG United Kingdom.

Cases of canine tuberculosis, a zoonotic infection of significant public health significance, are typically only sporadically reported in the literature. For this observational study, case details were collated both retrospectively and prospectively for dogs infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis-complex (MTBC) organisms. A total of 18 previously unreported cases as well as 565 historically reported confirmed cases were reviewed.

Mycobacterium microti is a member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex that seldom causes disease in livestock and humans. This study evaluated the effects on immunodiagnosis and the pathological findings in goats after experimental exposure by different routes and doses to M. microti.
