Chiral sum-frequency (SF) spectroscopy that measures both the real and the imaginary components of the SF spectral response was demonstrated for the first time. It was based on interference of the SF signal with a dispersionless SF reference. Solutions of 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BN) were used as model systems, and their chiral SF spectra over the first exciton-split transitions were obtained. Chiral spectra are useful for determination of absolute configuration and conformation of chiral molecules.

Organic multilayer systems, which are stacked layers of different organic materials, are used in various organic electronic devices such as organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) and organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). In particular, OFETs are promising as key components in flexible electronic devices. In this study, we investigated how the inclusion of an insulating tetratetracontane (TTC) interlayer in ambipolar indigo-based OFETs can be used to alter the crystallinity and electrical properties of the indigo charge transport layer.

The high-quality factor resonant metasurfaces have extensive applications in enhancing nonlinear frequency conversion efficiency at the subwavelength scale. However, methods for actively modulating the frequency conversion process are limited. We design a chiral lithium niobate film metasurface and investigate the photonic spin as a new degree of freedom to dynamically control the second-order nonlinear frequency conversion, without reconfiguring the structure by using external stimuli.

Extracting the Heterogeneous 3D Structure of Molecular Films Using Higher Dimensional SFG Microscopy.

J Phys Chem Lett

Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Faradayweg 4-6, Berlin 14195, Germany.

Ultrathin molecular films are widespread in both natural and industrial settings, where details of the molecular structure such as density, out-of-plane tilt angles, and in-plane directionality determine their physicochemical properties. Many of these films possess important molecular-to-macroscopic heterogeneity in these structural parameters, which have traditionally been difficult to characterize. Here, we show how extending sum-frequency generation (SFG) microscopy measurements to higher dimensionality by azimuthal-scanning can extract the spatial variation in the three-dimensional molecular structure at an interface.

Experimental methods capable of selectively probing water at the DNA minor groove, major groove, and phosphate backbone are crucial for understanding how hydration influences DNA structure and function. Chiral-selective sum frequency generation spectroscopy (chiral SFG) is unique among vibrational spectroscopies because it can selectively probe water molecules that form chiral hydration structures around biomolecules. However, interpreting chiral SFG spectra is challenging since both water and the biomolecule can produce chiral SFG signals.

Close Packing in Trans Conformers Promotes the Formation of Supramolecular Structures with C Symmetry.

J Phys Chem Lett

Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at the Microscale, Department of Chemical Physics, University of Science and Technology of China, 96 Jinzhai Road, Hefei, Anhui 230026, China.

Assemblies with C symmetry exhibit important applications in many fields such as enantioselective catalysis. However, their formation is challenging due to their large entropic disadvantage, and molecular information on their formation dynamics is limited because of the lack of effective characterization techniques. Here, using achiral amphiphilic molecules such as N-oleoyl ethanolamide (OEA) and its analogues as modeling assembly units, we demonstrated that the sss polarization signals, generated by femtosecond sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy (SFG-VS), provide a powerful tool to monitor the formation dynamics of the C symmetric supramolecular structures at the interfaces.
