Objective: The goal was to assess the influence of recent infection on screening tests for iron depletion (zinc protoporphyrin and hemoglobin) among low-income, preschool-aged children.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at community sites and ambulatory care clinics in Hartford, Connecticut, and included 180 preschool-aged children. Iron depletion was defined as serum ferritin levels of < or = 15 microg/L. Recent illness was defined by parent or guardian (caretaker) report or evidence of elevated C-reactive protein concentrations. History of anemia was determined through medical records review. Sensitivity, specificity and positive predictive values of hemoglobin and zinc protoporphyrin were calculated overall and for children with and without recent illness.

Results: At enrollment, more than one half of the children had a recent illness, and 57.5% had a history of anemia. More than one third had iron depletion. Serum ferritin levels were significantly higher among recently ill children. Secondary to recent illness, the positive predictive value of elevated zinc protoporphyrin, but not low hemoglobin, was reduced significantly. Zinc protoporphyrin levels of >69 micromol/mol heme identified significantly more iron-deficient children.

Conclusions: Compared with anemia, elevated zinc protoporphyrin levels identified significantly more iron-deficient children. Recently ill children were one half as likely to have low serum ferritin levels, compared with children without recent illness. The negative effect of recent illness on the positive predictive value of zinc protoporphyrin when ferritin is used to determine iron status has many practical implications.

Background And Objectives: The optimal iron hypothesis (OIH) posits that risk for infection is lowest at a mild level of iron deficiency. The extent to which this protection results from arms race dynamics in the evolution of iron acquisition and sequestration mechanisms is unclear. We evaluated the OIH with regard to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), an emerging infectious agent.

Article Synopsis
  • Cisplatin (DDP) is an effective treatment for advanced ovarian cancer but faces issues like resistance and toxicity; traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs), specifically the herb pair Scutellaria barbata D.Don and Hedyotis diffusa Willd (SB-HD), are being explored for their potential to enhance DDP's effectiveness.
  • In laboratory studies, a 2:1 ratio of SB-HD to DDP showed synergistic effects in reducing ovarian cancer cell viability, promoting apoptosis, and inhibiting cell migration; in animal models, this combination significantly suppressed tumor growth while minimizing DDP's toxic side effects.
  • The mechanism behind this synergistic effect involves promoting oxidative stress, altering energy production, and modulating specific

Seventeen strains of LAB (lactic acid bacteria) were screened for their ability to form ZnPP (zinc protoporphyrin) by measuring fluorescence intensity. Three strains ( JX11, MDJ8, and Q) exhibited notable ZnPP-forming ability. The ferrochelatase enzyme activity of JX11 was significantly higher than that of the other two strains ( < 0.

M2 macrophage derived HMOX1 defines chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

Department of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Beijing TongRen Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing, China.

Background: Molecular signatures of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) related to macrophages remain unclear. This study aimed to develop a macrophage-associated diagnostic signature for CRSwNP.

Methods: Transcriptome data from 54 patients with CRSwNP and 37 healthy controls across GSE136825, GSE36830, and GSE72713 were used to identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between two groups.
