Published: July 2006

Cholecystokinin and gastrin receptors (CCK1R and CCK2R) are G protein-coupled receptors that have been the subject of intensive research in the last 10 years with corresponding advances in the understanding of their functioning and physiology. In this review, we first describe general properties of the receptors, such as the different signaling pathways used to exert short- and long-term effects and the structural data that explain their binding properties, activation, and regulation. We then focus on peripheral cholecystokinin receptors by describing their tissue distribution and physiological actions. Finally, pathophysiological peripheral actions of cholecystokinin receptors and their relevance in clinical disorders are reviewed.

Context: In males of normal weight, intraduodenal administration of calcium enhances the effects of the amino acid, L-tryptophan (Trp), to suppress energy intake, associated with greater stimulation of cholecystokinin (CCK), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide tyrosine-tyrosine (PYY) secretion (key mechanisms underlying the regulation of pyloric motility and gastric emptying), but not gastrin or glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP).

Objective: Given the implications for the management of obesity, the current study evaluated the effects of calcium, when administered alone and in combination with Trp, on gut hormone secretion, antropyloroduodenal motility and energy intake in males with obesity.

Methods: Fifteen males with obesity and without type 2 diabetes (mean±SD; age: 27±8 years; body mass index: 30±2 kg/m2; HbA1c: 5.

Kidney Gastrin/CCKBR Attenuates Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus by Inhibiting SGLT2-Mediated Glucose Reabsorption through Erk/NF-κB Signaling Pathway.

Diabetes Metab J

December 2024

Institute of Laboratory Animal Science, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences (CAMS) & Comparative Medicine Center, Peking Union Medical College (PUMC), and Beijing Engineering Research Center for Experimental Animal Models of Human Critical Diseases, Beijing, China.

Background: Both sodium-glucose cotransporters (SGLTs) and Na+/H+ exchangers (NHEs) rely on a favorable Na-electrochemical gradient. Gastrin, through the cholecystokinin B receptor (CCKBR), can induce natriuresis and diuresis by inhibiting renal NHEs activity. The present study aims to unveil the role of renal CCKBR in diabetes through SGLT2-mediated glucose reabsorption.

Interaction between central cholecystokinin and dopaminergic system in layer-type chickens' food intake.

Behav Brain Res

March 2025

Department of Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Science and Research Branch, Islamic Azad University, Tehran, Iran.

The mechanisms governing food intake and appetite regulation in the brain are intricate and vary across different animal species. Dopamine and cholecystokinin (CCK) are recognized as two critical neurotransmitters involved in the control of food intake; however, the potential interactions between these neurotransmitters remain poorly understood. Consequently, this study aimed to investigate the interactions between central CCK and the dopaminergic system in the feeding behavior of layer-type chickens.

Cholecystokinin and gastrin as immune modulating hormones: Implications and applications.

Cytokine Growth Factor Rev

December 2024

KU Leuven Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Transplantation, Rega Institute, Division of Virology, Antiviral Drug and Vaccine Research, Laboratory of Molecular Vaccinology and Vaccine Discovery, Leuven, Belgium. Electronic address:

Cholecystokinin (CCK) and gastrin are gastrointestinal hormones traditionally recognised for their roles in digestion. However, it has been recognised that these hormones may also modulate immune function. Here, we examine the immune-modulating effects of CCK and gastrin, and explore the functional significance of this dual role.

Proteomic Insights into the Effects of Jianweixiaoshi Tablets on Functional Dyspepsia with Spleen Deficiency in Rats.

Drug Des Devel Ther

November 2024

State Key Laboratory for the Modernization of Classical and Famous Prescriptions of Chinese Medicine, Nanchang, 330096, People's Republic of China.

Background: Jianweixiaoshi tablets (JWXS) is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine for treating functional dyspepsia with spleen deficiency (SD-FD) in China. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of JWXS remain incompletely understood.

Methods: Functional dyspepsia was induced in rats with spleen deficiency by iodoacetamide in combination with the modified multiple platform method.
