Emotion with tears decreases allergic responses to latex in atopic eczema patients with latex allergy.

J Psychosom Res

Department of Allergy, Satou Hospital, Hirakata, Osaka 573-1124, Japan.

Published: July 2006

Objective: Allergic responses are enhanced by stress, whereas they are reduced by laughter in atopic eczema patients. Emotion with tears decreases plasma IL-6 levels in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Thus, the effect of emotion with tears on allergic responses in patients with atopic eczema was studied.

Methods: Sixty patients with atopic eczema having latex allergy viewed both the weather information video and the heart-warming movie, Kramer vs. Kramer. Just before and immediately after viewing each video, allergic responses to latex were measured.

Results: Viewing the weather information video did not cause emotion with tears in any patients, and it failed to modulate allergic responses. In contrast, viewing Kramer vs. Kramer caused emotion with tears in 44 of 60 patients, and it reduced allergic skin wheal responses to latex and latex-specific IgE production in them.

Conclusion: Emotion with tears reduced allergic responses, and it may be useful in the treatment of allergic diseases.

Background: Sleep disturbance is commonly reported by patients wearing an abduction brace after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR). Although a sling has been proven noninferior to an abduction brace for function and repair integrity, there is no evidence-based medical support for the advantage of the sling in improving sleep quality compared with a brace.

Purpose/hypothesis: This study aimed to compare the effects of a sling and an abduction brace on sleep quality and clinical outcomes after ARCR.

Could "preclinical takotsubo syndrome" be the cause of spontaneous coronary artery dissection?

Curr Probl Cardiol

January 2025

From the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, USA; The Division of Cardiology, Elmhurst Hospital Center, Elmhurst, NY, USA. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Takotsubo syndrome (TTS) and spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) are increasingly recognized as interconnected conditions, with SCAD potentially triggering TTS in response to various stresses.
  • The debate continues regarding the underlying mechanisms of both conditions, but SCAD can act as a precursor to TTS due to the stresses it imposes on the heart.
  • The review suggests examining the relationship between TTS and SCAD further, recommending strategies that consider both conditions regardless of which one occurs first.
