The okaramine family of compounds, a class of alkaloids with broad-spectrum insecticidal activity, has been discovered from species of and . These okaramines, characterized by their complex structures and diverse biological activities, have attracted widespread attention from biologists and chemists. To date, only a few okaramines have been synthesized, notably the highly active okaramines A and B, which feature a polycyclic skeleton, including an azocine ring and an unprecedented 2-dimethyl-3-methyl-azetidine ring.

Topology-based protein classification: A deep learning approach.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

February 2025

School of Systems Biology, George Mason University, Manassas, VA, 20110, USA. Electronic address:

Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in computational biology techniques could offer significant advantages in alleviating the growing workloads faced by structural biologists, especially with the emergence of big data. In this study, we employed Delaunay tessellation as a promising method to obtain the overall structural topology of proteins. Subsequently, we developed multi-class deep neural network models to classify protein superfamilies based on their local topology.

Biomedical applications of the engineered AIEgen-lipid nanostructureand.

Prog Biomed Eng (Bristol)

December 2024

School of Biomedical Engineering, The Key Laboratory of Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies, The First Affiliated Hospital, Guangzhou Institute of Cancer Research, the Affiliated Cancer Hospital, Guangzhou Medical University, Guangzhou 510260, People's Republic of China.

Since the concept of aggregation-induced emission (AIE) was first coined by Tang and co-workers, AIE-active luminogens (AIEgens) have drawn widespread attention among chemists and biologists due to their unique advantages such as high fluorescence efficiency, large Stokes shift, good photostability, low background noise, and high biological visualization capabilities in the aggregated state, surpassing conventional fluorophores. A growing number of AIEgens have been engineered to possess multifunctional properties, including near-infrared emission, two-photon absorption, reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and photothermal conversion, making them suitable for deep-tissue imaging and phototherapy. AIEgens show great potential in biomedical applicationsand.

What Can Genome Sequence Data Reveal About Population Viability?

Mol Ecol

December 2024

Department of Biology, Graduate Degree Program in Ecology, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colorado, USA.

Biologists have long sought to understand the impacts of deleterious genetic variation on fitness and population viability. However, our understanding of these effects in the wild is incomplete, in part due to the rarity of sufficient genetic and demographic data needed to measure their impact. The genomics revolution is promising a potential solution by predicting the effects of deleterious genetic variants (genetic load) bioinformatically from genome sequences alone bypassing the need for costly demographic data.
