Catechin and epicatechin biosyntheses were studied of grape (Vitis vinifera L.), apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) and other crop leaves, since these monomers and the derived proanthocyanidins are important disease resistance factors. Grape and apple leucoanthocyanidin 4-reductase (LAR; EC 1.17.1.3) enzymes were characterized on basis of plant and recombinant enzymes. In case of grape, two LAR cDNAs were cloned by assembling available EST sequences. Grape and apple leaf anthocyanidin reductase (ANR; EC 1.3.1.77) cDNAs were also obtained and the respective plant and recombinant enzymes were characterized. Despite general low substrate specificity, within the respective flavonoid biosyntheses of grape and apple leaves, both enzyme types deliver differently hydroxylated catechins and epicatechins, due to substrate availability in vivo. Furthermore, for LAR enzymes conversion of 3-deoxyleucocyanidin was shown. Beside relevance for plant protection, this restricts the number of possible reaction mechanisms of LAR. ANR enzyme activity was demonstrated for a number of other crop plants and its correlation with (-)-epicatechin and obvious competition with UDP-glycosyl:flavonoid-3-O-glycosyltransferases was considered.

Impairment of gut barrier integrity is associated with the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, colorectal cancer, and coeliac disease. While many aspects of diet have been linked to improved barrier function, (poly)phenols, a broad group of bioactive phytochemicals, are of potential interest. The (poly)phenolic sub-class, flavan-3-ols, have been investigated in some detail owing to their abundance in commonly consumed foods, including grapes, tea, apples, cocoa, berries, and nuts.

This study proposes an advanced plant disease classification framework leveraging the Attention Score-Based Multi-Vision Transformer (Multi-ViT) model. The framework introduces a novel attention mechanism to dynamically prioritize relevant features from multiple leaf images, overcoming the limitations of single-leaf-based diagnoses. Building on the Vision Transformer (ViT) architecture, the Multi-ViT model aggregates diverse feature representations by combining outputs from multiple ViTs, each capturing unique visual patterns.

A highly sensitive lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for imidacloprid, a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, has been developed. The LFIA realizes the indirect coupling of anti-imidacloprid antibodies and gold nanoparticle (GNP) labels directly in the course of the assay. For this purpose, the common GNPs conjugate with anti-imidacloprid antibodies and are changed into a combination of non-modified, anti-imidacloprid antibodies, and the GNPs conjugate with anti-species antibodies.

Biochars (BCs) derived from waste-branches of apple tree, grape tree, and oak were developed for direct solid-phase extraction (SPE) of five benzodiazepines (BZDs) in crude urine samples prior to liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) determination. Scanning electron microscopy, elemental analyzer, X-ray diffractometry, N adsorption/desorption experiments, and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry characterizations revealed the existence of their mesoporous structure and numerous oxygen-containing functional groups. The obtained BCs not only possessed high affinity towards BZDs via π-π and hydrogen bond interactions, but also afforded the great biocompatibility of excluding interfering components from undiluted urine samples when using SPE adsorbents.

To clarify the effects of pervaporation and distillation on aroma profiles, the Sensomics approach investigated the aroma characteristics and key aroma compounds of Cabernet Sauvignon (CS) and Ugni Blanc (UB) grape spirits produced by pervaporation (UB-P, CS-P) and distillation (UB-D, CS-D). The results indicated that pervaporated grape spirits exhibited stronger floral and fruity aromas, while distilled grape spirits were characterized by more pronounced cooked apple and toasty aromas. Consumers preferred products with intense floral and fruity aromas and weaker cooked apple note.
