Engineering the behavioral engineer.

J Appl Behav Anal

Kingston Psychiatric Hospital, Kingston, Ontario.

Published: June 2010

Twenty-eight nursing staff members treated, by operant methods, a simulated headbanging patient. They were randomly assigned to four experimental conditions, involving improvement versus non-improvement of the "patient" and promise of reward versus no promise of reward. The promise of reward significantly improved accuracy of treatment. Improvement of the patient, however, did not improve accuracy.

Murayama and Jach offer valuable suggestions for how to integrate computational processes into motivation theory, but these processes cannot do away with motivation altogether. Rewards are only rewarding because people want and like them - that is, because of motivation. Sexual desire is not primarily a quest for rewarding information.

The reward responsivity hypothesis of self-control proposes that, irrespective of self-control success, exercising self-control is aversive and engenders negative affect. To countermand this discomfort, reward-seeking behavior may be amplified after bouts of self-control, bringing individuals back to a mildly positive baseline state. Previous studies indicated that effort-an integral component of self-control-can increase reward responsivity.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) is considered a global health issue that affects various aspects of patients' lives and poses a considerable burden on society. Due to the high prevalence of remissions and relapses, novel therapeutic approaches are required to manage OUD. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is one of the most promising clinical breakthroughs in translational neuroscience.

This study introduces a novel ensemble learning technique namely Multi-Armed Bandit Ensemble (MAB-Ensemble), designed for lane detection in road images intended for autonomous vehicles. The foundation of the proposed MAB-Ensemble technique is inspired in terms of Multi-Armed bandit optimization to facilitate efficient model selection for lane segmentation. The benchmarking dataset namely TuSimple is used for training, validating and testing the proposed and existing lane detection techniques.
