Phototoxic reaction to oral terbinafine due to Tinea capitis in a child.

Acta Dermatovenerol Croat

November 2024

Prof. Ana Bakija-Konsuo, MD, PhD, Clinic for Dermatovenerology CUTIS, Vukovarska 22, Dubrovnik, Croatia;

We report the case of an 18-month-old boy who developed a phototoxic skin reaction to terbinafine on his scalp, ears, and face in the form of disseminated erythematous plaques, which resembled subacute lupus erythematosus (SCLE) in their clinical presentation. Skin changes appeared a short time after the boy was exposed to sunlight during the period of time when he was treated with oral terbinafine due to Microsporum canis fungal scalp infection. Tinea capitis is a common dermatophyte infection primarily affecting prepubertal children (1).

Breast cancer stem cells (CSCs) are resistant to most cancer therapeutics and contribute to tumor recurrence and metastasis. Two breast CSC-promoting transcription factors, truncated glioma-associated oncogene homolog 1 (tGLI1) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), have been reported to be frequently co-expressed in HER2-enriched breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), undergo protein-protein interactions for gene regulation and activation, and functionally cooperate to promote breast CSCs. STAT3 can be activated by activated interleukin-6 receptor/glycoprotein-130 (IL-6R/GP130).

Article Synopsis
  • A systematic review evaluated levoketoconazole’s effectiveness and safety for treating Cushing's syndrome, finding it to be 15-25 times more potent than ketoconazole.
  • In clinical studies, 61% of patients showed normalized 24-hour urine-free cortisol levels after 6 months of treatment, with significant increases in cortisol observed when the medication was withdrawn.
  • Patients re-initiating levoketoconazole experienced rapid decreases in cortisol levels, and better therapeutic responses were seen in the levoketoconazole group compared to the placebo group, indicating its strong efficacy.

American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: Imported cases in Berlin 2000-2023.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

July 2024

Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, corporate member of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Charité Center for Global Health, Institute of International Health, Berlin, Germany.

Background: American Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (ACL) shows variable response to therapy, but data on species-specific treatment efficacy is scarce. We describe the clinical characteristics and outcome of patients with ACL imported to a tertiary centre in Germany and determine whether species-specific therapy according to the 2014 "LeishMan" group recommendations is associated with cure.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted at the Charité Institute of International Health in Berlin.

Article Synopsis
  • Jazan Industrial Economic City (JIEC) is a hub for various heavy industries in Saudi Arabia, including petroleum and water desalination, which produce significant amounts of industrial wastewater containing toxic substances.
  • The study focuses on isolating 32 fungal strains from this wastewater that can tolerate multiple heavy metals and have efficient bioremediation capabilities for pollutants like crude oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
  • Among these fungi, isolate JAZ-20 exhibited outstanding bioremoval efficiency, achieving up to 100% removal of several harmful pollutants and demonstrating low levels of antibiotic resistance within the mycobiome.
