Published: April 2006

Objective: To study the chemical constituents from the roots of Ardisia punctata.

Method: Compounds were isolated by chromatographic techniques on silica gel and Rp-HPLC column. Their structures were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic methods.

Result: Twelve compounds were identified as 3-hydroxy-5-tridecyl-methyl phenyl ether (1), 5-pentadecyl-1, 3-benzenediol (2), 2-methoxy-6-tridecyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (3), 2-methoxy-6-pentadecyl-1, 4-benzoquinone (4), glutinol (5), ardisicrenoside A (6), ardisiacrispin B (7), 24-ethyl-5a-cholesta-7, 22(E)-dien-3-one (8), 24-ethyl-5alpha-cholesta-7, 22(E)-dien-3beta-ol (9), daucosterol (10), vanillin acid (11), tetratriacontanoic acid (12).

Conclusion: All the compounds were obtained from this plant for the first time.

Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) is a lipophilic active constituent derived from the rhizomes and roots of (Danshen), a common Chinese medicinal herb. However, clinical applications of Tan IIA are limited due to its poor solubility in water. : To overcome this limitation, we developed a calcium alginate hydrogel (CA) as a hydrophilic carrier for Tan IIA, which significantly improved its solubility.

Trifolirhizin is an important flavonoid glycoside reported from the roots of medicinal plants such as Astragalus membranaceus, Sophora tonkinensis, Ononis vaginalis, Euchresta formosana, Sophora Subprostrate, Ononis spinose, and Sophora flavescens. It is considered one of the important constituents responsible for the various medicinal properties of these medicinal plants. Studies have revealed the multiple pharmacological properties of trifolirhizin: anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-ulcerative colitis, antiasthma, hepatoprotective, osteogenic, skin-whitening, wound-healing, and anticancer (against various types of cancers).

Species of the genus are known for their pharmacological properties and essential oils, the chemical composition of which remains inadequately studied. In this work, GC-MS analysis, synthesis, and spectral techniques (UV, IR, MS, and NMR) were employed to identify 83 constituents in the essential oil from roots, which accounted for 98.1% of the total GC-peak area.

, a tropical African plant, is traditionally used to treat several diseases, including fever, inflammation, and malaria. Essential oils (EOs) from the plant's leaves, roots, and trunk bark were obtained by hydrodistillation, and their chemical composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The major constituents identified were virdiflorene (18.

The chemical composition and biological activity of and are scarcely investigated. In this study, the nutritional and chemical profiles of and , considering their different morphological parts (leaves, fruits and roots), were assessed together with their antioxidant and antibacterial potential. Our results showed that carbohydrates are the major macronutrients in both species (above 62 g/100 g dry weight-DW).
