The stimulating effect of copper addition on the reduction rate of nitrous oxide (N(2)O) to dinitrogen (N(2)) in the presence of sulfide was investigated in batch experiments (pH 7.0; 55 degrees C). N(2)O was dosed either directly as a gas to the headspace of the bottles or formed as intermediate during the denitrification of nitrite in Fe(II)EDTA(2-)-containing medium and nitrate in Fe(II)EDTA(2-)-free medium. Sulfide was either dosed externally or generated from endogenous sulfur sources during anaerobic incubation of the sludge. In the presence of sulfide (from 15 microM to 1mM), heterotrophic denitrification using ethanol as electron donor was incomplete, i.e., N(2)O accumulated instead of N(2) or was transiently formed. Copper addition (60 microM) rapidly stimulated the reduction of N(2)O to N(2). Zinc addition (60 microM) did not have a similar strong stimulating effect as observed for copper and the N(2)O reduction rate was not stimulated at all upon supply of FeCl(3) (2 mM). Thus, a copper deficiency for N(2)O reduction is most likely developed in the presence of sulfide. It is suggested that sulfide induces this deficiency as it readily precipitates as copper sulfide and thus scavenges copper in the medium or that sulfide inactivates the N(2)OR reductase as it sequesters the copper of this metalloenzyme.

Exploring and developing novel, low-cost, and environmentally friendly photovoltaic materials is a vital trend in the evolution of solar cell technology. The distinctive properties of alkali bismuth ternary sulfides have spurred increased research and application in optoelectronic devices. In this study, a novel method is reported for preparing NaBiS film by sequential thermal evaporation of NaS and BiS layers followed by heating post-treatment for the first time, as well as the preparation of solar cells with NaBiS as the light-absorbing layer.

Both hydrogen sulfide and endocannabinoids can protect the neural retina from toxic insults under in vitro and in vivo conditions. The aim of the present study was two-fold: (a) to examine the neuroprotective action of cannabinoids [methanandamide and 2-arachidonyl glycerol (2-AG)] against hydrogen peroxide (HO)-induced oxidative damage in the isolated bovine retina and (b) to evaluate the role of endogenously biosynthesized hydrogen sulfide (HS) in the inhibitory actions of cannabinoids on the oxidative stress in the bovine retina. Isolated neural retinas from cows were exposed to oxidative damage using HO (100 µM) for 10 min.

The behavior of low-carbon steels (LCSs), a high-strength steel and a nickel-chromium alloy in HCl solutions in the presence of N-containing organic substances has been studied. N-containing organic substances that comprise 1,2,4-triazole in their structure (substance I and substance II) provide comprehensive protection of various steel grades from corrosion and hydrogen absorption by the metal bulk in HCl solutions under both isobaric and isochoric conditions. All the compounds studied reduce, to varying degrees, the concentration of hydrogen adsorbed and absorbed by steel in HCl solutions.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) using thermal and tumor microenvironment-responsive reagents is promising for cancer treatment. This study demonstrates an effective PTT nanodrug consisting of hollow-structured, thermally sensitive polydopamine nanobowls (HPDA NB), molybdenum sulfide (MoS) nanozyme, and tirapazamine (TPZ; a hypoxia-responsive drug), with a structure of HPDA@TPZ/MoS NBs which is hereafter denoted as HPTZMoS NBs. With the Fenton-like activity, the HPTZMoS NBs in the presence of HO catalyze the formation of hydroxyl radicals, providing chemodynamic therapy (CDT) effect and deactivating glutathione.

The lactic acid bacterial (LAB) species have proven multifaceted roles in sustainable agriculture due to their biologically safe nature, making them eco-friendly. However, their plant growth-improving mechanisms in stressed and non-stressed conditions are still under consideration. Thus, the current work has been planned to evaluate the drought tolerance potential and plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits of Loigolactobacillus coryniformis BCH-4 in Zea mays L.
