Linear quadrupoles with added hexapole fields are described. The shifts in ion oscillation frequency caused by the addition of a hexapole field are calculated within the effective potential model. Methods to construct linear quadrupoles with added hexapole fields with exact electrode geometries and with round rods are discussed. A quadrupole with added hexapole field can be constructed with round rods by rotating two rods (say the y rods) towards an x rod. Computer simulations are used to investigate the possibility of mass analysis with quadrupoles with added hexapole fields. We find that a quadrupole with an added hexapole field in the range 2-12% can provide mass analysis provided the dc is applied with the correct polarity and value. When a rod set is constructed with round rods, other multipoles in the potential degrade the peak shape, resolution and transmission. The largest of these after the quadrupole and hexapole are a dipole and octopole term. With round rod sets, the peak shape can be improved by using different diameters for the x and y rod pairs to minimize the octopole term in the potential and by injecting ions at the field center where the dipole term is zero. Calculations of the boundaries of the stability diagram for this case show the boundaries move out, relative to those of a pure quadrupole field, but remain sharp.

The last decade has seen widespread adoption of triple quadrupole-based inductively coupled plasma-tandem mass spectrometry (ICPMS/MS) technique using a collision/reaction cell in combination with a precell bandpass mass analyzer to measure isotopes otherwise masked by spectral interferences. High-precision isotope ratio analysis containing such isotopes would benefit from a similar capability on a multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) platform, but using a quadrupole-based precell mass analyzer for MC-ICPMS/MS has several limitations. To overcome these limitations, we developed a novel precell mass analyzer for MC-ICPMS/MS using sector field technology.

Design of Wideband Bandpass Filter Based on Corrugated Disk Resonator with Multiple Resonant Modes.

A corrugated disk resonator with eight grooves is proposed for wideband bandpass filter (BPF) design. Due to the spoof localized surface plasmons resonances of the corrugated metallic structure, the dipole, quadrupole, hexapole modes, and a fundamental mode excited by the introduced short-circuited via holes are employed to realize four transmission poles (TPs) in the passband. The theoretical analysis is described by the electric field and current distributions on the resonator.

Two graphene-based T-shaped multifunctional components for THz and long-wave infrared regions are proposed and analyzed. The first component can serve as a divider, a switch, and a dynamically controllable filter. This T-junction presents a circular graphene resonator and three graphene waveguides with surface plasmon-polariton waves connected frontally to the resonator.

Permanent magnet multipoles (PMMs) are widely used in accelerators to either focus particle beams or confine plasma in ion sources. The real magnetic field created by PMMs is calculated by magnetic field simulation software and then used in particle tracking codes by means of a three dimensional magnetic field map. A common alternative is to use the so-called "hard-edge" model, which gives an approximation of the magnetic field inside the PMM assuming a null fringe field.

Anisotropic transverse light scattering by prismatic nanowires is a natural outcome of their geometry. In this work, we perform numerical calculations of the light scattering characteristics for nanowires in the optical and near-infrared range and explore the possibility of tuning the directivity by changing the angle of light incidence. The scattering cross section and the directivity of the scattered light when it is incident perpendicular to a facet or to an edge of the prism are investigated both with transverse electric and with transverse magnetic polarizations.
