Xylem plasticity is important for trees to coordinate hydraulic efficiency and safety under changing soil water availability. However, the physiological and transcriptional regulations of cambium on xylem plasticity are not well understood. In this study, mulberry saplings of drought-resistant Wubu and drought-susceptible Zhongshen1 were subjected to moderate or severe drought stresses for 21 days and subsequently rewatered for 12 days.

Teredinibacter turnerae is a cultivable cellulolytic Gammaproteobacterium (Cellvibrionaceae) that commonly occurs as an intracellular endosymbiont in the gills of wood-eating bivalves of the family Teredinidae (shipworms). The genome of T. turnerae encodes a broad range of enzymes that deconstruct cellulose, hemicellulose and pectin and contribute to wood (lignocellulose) digestion in the shipworm gut.

Bamboo particleboards are recognized as a highly promising alternative to traditional wood particleboards owing to their short growth cycle, abundant availability, and exceptional mechanical properties. However, bamboo particleboards frequently exhibit undesirable hygroscopicity, which limits their broader applications. This study introduces a straightforward and inhibitor-free carbonization treatment method to enhance the water resistance properties of bamboo particleboards.

Hemicelluloses play a crucial role in connecting cellulose and lignin within the plant cell wall and find extensive biotechnological applications. There is a notable gap in research concerning the hemicellulose from Nelumbo nucifera, the basal eudicot adapted to aquatic environments. To fill this gap, hemicellulose characteristics from the apical to the basal segments of petioles from 4-month-old N.

Background: Deadwood decomposition is an essential ecological process in forest ecosystems, playing a key role in nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration by enriching soils with organic matter. This process is driven by diverse microbial communities encompassing specialized functions in breaking down organic matter, but the specific roles of individual microorganisms in this process are still not fully understood.
Results: Here, we characterized the deadwood microbiome in a natural mixed temperate forest in Central Europe using PacBio HiFi long-read sequencing and a genome-resolved transcriptomics approach in order to uncover key microbial contributors to wood decomposition.
