Philasterides dicentrarchi is a free-living microaerophilic scuticociliate that can become a facultative parasite and cause a serious parasitic disease in farmed fish. Both the free-living and parasitic forms of this scuticociliate are exposed to oxidative stress associated with environmental factors and the host immune system. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by the host are neutralized by the ciliate by means of antioxidant defences.

We investigated how different light spectra affect thermal stress in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), using light emitting diodes (LEDs; blue, 450 nm; green, 530 nm; red, 630 nm) at two intensities (0.3 and 0.5 W/m(2)) at relatively high water temperatures (25 and 30 °C, compared to a control condition of 20 °C).

The effect of hydrostatic pressure treatment on the induction of mitogynogenesis in the eggs of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus (Temminck et Schlegel) by using heterospecific sperm were studied. Before treatment, the eggs were at metaphase of the first mitosis. The spindle was disassembled by the treatment and then resembled in its pretreatment position, and the chromosomes were rearranged, i.

We investigated the effects of specific wavelengths of light on the growth of barfin flounder. The fish, reared in white tanks in a dark room, were irradiated with light from light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with peak wavelengths of 464nm (blue), 518nm (green), and 635nm (red) under a controlled photoperiod (10.5:13.

A technology for inactivation of pathogens in human blood products by treatment with amotosalen hydrochloride (S-59) in combination with long wavelength ultraviolet light (UVA) to decrease transfusion-mediated sepsis has been applied to make safe vaccines against human pathogenic bacteria, and the resultants were called killed but metabolically active (KBMA) bacteria. In the present study, we first generated KBMA Edwardsiella tarda and evaluated its potential as a protective vaccine in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus). To prevent the restoration of division ability by removal of psoralen adducts in the bacterial chromosome through the nucleotide excision repair (NER), the uvrA and uvrB genes knock-out E.
