Three Gram-negative, non-motile, non-pigmented, oxidase-positive coccobacilli capable of growth at temperatures from -10 to 30 degrees C and salinities of 0 to 1.7 M NaCl were isolated from Siberian permafrost and characterized. Both 16S rRNA and gyrB gene sequencing studies placed the isolates in the Gammaproteobacteria within the genus Psychrobacter. However, with higher bootstrap values and reproducible tree topologies, gyrB represented a more reliable phylogenetic marker for the taxonomy of Psychrobacter species. DNA-DNA hybridization data supported gyrB tree topologies and established two relatedness groups within the three isolates; neither of these groups was related at the species level to any previously described Psychrobacter species. The two groups of isolates could be differentiated phenotypically from 13 previously described Psychrobacter species using API strips. These results support the existence of two novel species of Psychrobacter, for which we propose the names Psychrobacter cryohalolentis sp. nov. (type strain K5(T) = DSM 17306(T) = VKM B-2378(T)) and Psychrobacter arcticus sp. nov. (type strain 273-4(T) = DSM 17307(T) = VKM B-2377(T)).

Background: Reports of cases of bacterial infection due to transfusion of red blood cell (RBC) components (RBC-TTBI) are relatively rare. Hence, the possibility of undetectable bacterial contamination in RBCs, especially by psychrotrophic bacteria, must be clarified.

Biofilms are of great concern for the meat industry because, despite the implementation of control plans, they remain important hotspots of contamination by foodborne pathogens, highlighting the need to better understand the ecology of these microecosystems. The objective of this paper was to critically survey the recent scientific literature on microbial biofilms of importance for meat safety and quality, also pointing out the most promising methods to combat them. For this, the databases PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were surveyed in a 10-year time frame (but preferably papers less than 5 years old) using selected keywords relevant for the microbiology of meats, especially considering bacteria that are tolerant to cleaning and sanitization processes.

The objective of the present study was to determine whether the addition of a blend based on the essential oils of cinnamon, oregano, and eucalyptus to the liquid diets of calves would stimulate the immune system combined with anti-inflammatory action, minimize oxidative responses, and alter the intestinal microbiota, consequently enhancing animal growth. Twenty-four male Holstein calves (approximately five days old) were suckled for 60 days, underwent a weaning process, and were followed up until day 75 of the experiment. The calves were divided into control ( = 12) and phytobiotic ( = 12) groups, receiving commercial milk replacer and pelleted concentrate ad libitum.

The gut microbiota of migratory birds is influenced by their food choices, and exploring the potential relationship between diet composition and gut microbiota can help better protect related species. By integrating non-invasive sampling techniques, high-throughput sequencing technology, and microscopic examination technology, this study presents the first evidence on diet composition during overwintering periods as well as the potential relationship between diet composition and gut microbiota in wild relict gulls (). Thirty-five fecal samples from two consecutive overwintering periods (2021 and 2022 overwintering periods) in Tianjin coastal wetland were used to investigate inter-year consistencies and discrepancies on diet composition and gut microbiota in wild It was found that the common dominant phyla of both 2021 and 2022 group included Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi and Actinobacteriota.
