Production of purebred or crossbred feeder calves for beef, especially HolsteinxJapanese-Black (HxJB) and Japanese-Black (JB), from dairy cattle using artificial insemination or embryo transfer have been used widely in Japan. However, dairy farmers feel uneasy about the effects of calf breed on the economic traits of dams. In this study, those effects were investigated in 798 Holstein heifers bearing Holstein, HxJB, JB or other breed calves. The results of the least-squares ANOVA indicated the effects of calf breed to be significant for gestation length (P<0.01) and calf birth weight (P<0.01) but not for milk yield, fat yield, protein yield, peak yield, day of peak, number of artificial inseminations per pregnancy or days open. Frequency of dystocia was lower in dams bearing HxJB calves than in those bearing Holstein calves (P<0.05). There were no significant differences for frequencies of still birth, retained placenta and subsequent pregnancy. The present data suggest that the effects of calf breed do not place a serious problem on the economic traits of Holstein dams. In conclusion, it is indicated that the production of JB and HxJB feeder calves from Holstein dams does not result in a decrease in dam productivity.

Introduction: This study examines the effects of steam-flaked corn starter on pre-weaned Simmental calves' growth, immunity, and metabolism. Despite benefits shown in adult cattle, research on calves is limited. The goal is to optimize calf feeding for better growth, health, and nutrient use.

Although 3-nitrooxypropanol (3-NOP; Bovaer10) has been proven to reduce enteric methane (CH) by ∼30% in indoor systems of dairying when the additive is mixed throughout TMR and partial mixed ration (PMR) diets, there has been limited research to date on the CH abatement potential of 3-NOP when mixed within a diet based on perennial ryegrass silage only and fed to pregnant nonlactating dairy cows. To investigate the effect of 3-NOP supplementation on enteric CH emissions of pregnant nonlactating dairy cows, a 6-wk study was undertaken in which treatment cows were supplemented with 3-NOP mixed within grass silage, whereas control cows were offered grass silage without additive supplementation. Enteric CH, hydrogen (H), and carbon dioxide (CO) were measured using a GreenFeed machine.

The real rotational capacity of the human joints - the muscular and gravitational torques and the foot as a platform.

Acta Bioeng Biomech

Jagiellonian University Medical College, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Bioinformatics and Telemedicine, Kraków, Poland.

The purpose was to answer what is the relationship between torques acting on the human body, how does the triceps calf muscle balance the weight of a tilted body and what is the foot's role in the titling body? Two research models were developed. Model 1 - the one-sided lever system consists of a flat bar with, an axis of rotation, used to determine the weight and torque at a given point on it. Model 2 - the two-sided lever system consists of a flat bar imitating a tilted body counteracted by the Achilles tendon, and a platform imitating a foot.

Timed artificial insemination (TAI) is a technology widely used in cattle production based on controlling ovarian follicular growth. This study analyzed a large database aiming to determine the influence of several intrinsic and extrinsic female factors, as well as their interactions to determine risk factors and produce prediction ability in beef cattle. A total of 1 832 999 TAIs conducted on 2 002 farms across South American countries were considered for the analysis, including 15 main fixed effects or interactions in the statistical model, in addition to five random effects.

While studying the prevalence and profile of antibiotic resistance among isolated from the feces of calves with signs of colibacillosis, a strain with a wide spectrum of drug resistance was isolated. Whole-genome sequencing, followed by bioinformatic processing and the annotation of genes of this strain, showed that the genome has a total length of 4,803,482 bp and contains 4986 genes, including 122 RNA genes. A total of 31% of the genes are functionally significant and represent 26 functional groups.
