What we believe to be a new and simple approach was developed for stabilizing a harmonic mode-locked fiber laser at 40 GHz. It uses a computer to tune the modulation frequency in a 100 kHz band near 40 GHz to follow variations in the length of the optical cavity. A second approach was also developed to compare with the new approach and to draw conclusions on its performance. Results for the pulse characteristics, side-mode suppression ratio, and timing jitter show that both approaches provide an efficient way of stabilizing a harmonic FM mode-locked fiber laser.

Associations of Voice Metrics with Postural Function in Parkinson's Disease.

Life (Basel)

December 2024

Neuromodulation Center and Center for Clinical Research Learning, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, 1575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, MA 02115, USA.

Background: This study aimed to explore the potential associations between voice metrics of patients with PD and their motor symptoms.

Methods: Motor and vocal data including the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale part III (UPDRS-III), Harmonic-Noise Ratio (HNR), jitter, shimmer, and smoothed cepstral peak prominence (CPPS) were analyzed through exploratory correlations followed by univariate linear regression analyses. We employed these four voice metrics as independent variables and the total and sub-scores of the UPDRS-III as dependent variables.

Silver gallium sulfide (AgGaS) is a ternary ABX-type semiconductor featuring a direct bandgap and high chemical stability. Structurally resembling diamond, AgGaS has gained considerable attention as a highly promising material for nonlinear optical applications such as second harmonic generation and optical parametric oscillation. In attempts to expand the research scope, on the one hand, AgGaS-derived bulk materials with similar diamond-like configurations have been investigated for the enhancement of nonlinear optics performance, especially the improvement of laser-induced damage thresholds and/or nonlinear coefficients; on the other hand, nanoscale AgGaS and its derivatives have been synthesized with sizes as low as the exciton Bohr radius for the realization of potential applications in the fields of optoelectronics and lighting.

Distributed feedback lasers, which feature rapid wavelength tunability, are not presently available in the yellow and orange spectral regions, impeding spectroscopic studies of short-lived species that absorb light in this range. To meet this need, a rapidly tunable laser system was constructed, characterized, and demonstrated for measurements of the NH radical at 597.4 nm.

Sensitivity of Acoustic Voice Quality Measures in Simulated Reverberation Conditions.

Bioengineering (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA 52242, USA.

Room reverberation can affect oral/aural communication and is especially critical in computer analysis of voice. High levels of reverberation can distort voice recordings, impacting the accuracy of quantifying voice production quality and vocal health evaluations. This study quantifies the impact of additive simulated reverberation on otherwise clean voice recordings as reflected in voice metrics commonly used for voice quality evaluation.
