Semifluorinated first-generation self-assembling dendrons attached via a flexible spacer to electron-donor molecules induce pi-stacking of the donors in the center of a supramolecular helical pyramidal column. These helical pyramidal columns self-organize in various columnar liquid crystal phases that mediate self-processing of large single crystal liquid crystal domains of columns and self-repair their intracolumnar structural defects. In addition, all supramolecular columns exhibit a columnar phase at lower temperatures that maintains the helical pyramidal columnar supramolecular structure and displays higher intracolumnar order than that in the liquid crystals phases. The results described here demonstrate the universality of this concept, the power of the fluorous phase or the fluorophobic effect in self-assembly and the unexpected generality of pyramidal liquid crystals.

This paper presents novel configurations for additively manufactured lattice structures, including helical and elliptic designs, in addition to the pyramid base model. Functionally graded versions of the pyramid and elliptic lattice structures are developed by considering desirable relative densities in each layer. The lattice structures were manufactured using Ti-6Al-4V powder in a three-dimensional selective laser melting printer.

The control of tetrahedral carbon stereocentres remains a focus of modern synthetic chemistry and is enabled by their configurational stability. By contrast, trisubstituted nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur compounds undergo pyramidal inversion, a fundamental and well-recognized stereochemical phenomenon that is widely exploited. However, the stereochemistry of oxonium ions-compounds bearing three substituents on a positively charged oxygen atom-is poorly developed and there are few applications of oxonium ions in synthesis beyond their existence as reactive intermediates.

Photoreceptors are a class of light-sensing proteins with critical biological functions. UVR8 is the only identified UV photoreceptor in plants and its dimer dissociation upon UV sensing activates UV-protective processes. However, the dissociation mechanism is still poorly understood.
