The role of chopper units in representing the pitch of complex sounds is unresolved. Traditionally chopper units have been regarded as primarily responding to the stimulus envelope of complex stimuli. This has been supported by the response of chopper units to iterated rippled noise (IRN) as they can provide a robust representation of the delay of IRN with positive gain (+) in their first-order interspike intervals and for some chopper units this representation is relatively level independent. The envelope modulation of IRN(+), and pitch, is at the reciprocal of the delay, the pitch of IRN with negative gain (IRN(-)) is often at twice the delay. This distinction between IRN(+) and IRN(-) can be used to help determine whether a unit is simply responding to modulation or to stimulus fine structure. Chopper units with relatively high best frequencies (BF) are unable to represent the distinction between IRN(+) and IRN(-). However, in this study it is shown that at least some chopper units, with low BFs (<1.25 kHz), can represent the pitch of the IRN(-) as perceived perceptually.

The mammalian auditory system encodes sounds with subtypes of spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) that differ in sound level sensitivity, permitting discrimination across a wide range of levels. Recent work suggests the physiologically-defined SGN subtypes correspond to at least three molecular subtypes. It is not known how information from the different subtypes converges within the cochlear nucleus.

A new fifteen-level stepped DC to AC hybrid converter is proposed for Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) applications. A boost chopper circuit is designed and interfaced with the fifteen-level hybrid converters specific to Electric Vehicles' Brushless DC Motor (BLDC) drive systems. In chopper units, the output of solar panels is regulated and stepped up to obtain the nominal output voltage.

Nowadays, Combine Harvesters are the most commonly used device for harvesting crops; as a result, a large amount of plant material and crop residue is concentrated into a narrow band of plant material that exits the combine, challenging the residue management task. This paper aims to develop a crop residue management machine that can chop paddy residues and mix them with the soil of the combined harvested paddy field. For this purpose, two important units are attached to the developed machine: the chopping and incorporation units.
