Numerous investigations have been performed, focusing on the anesthetic toxicity such as hepatotoxity or nephrotoxicity, for more than 40 years. However, recent basic researche has demonstrated several beneficial effects of anesthetics, including organ protection against ischemia and subsequent reperfusion, and anesthetic preconditioning, as well as clarified mechanisms of acute and delayed cell death, and apoptosis. In this special issue, four experts have provided new relevant information concerning brain, heart, lung, and liver protection by anesthetics, respectively.

Introduction: The mechanism of remimazolam, a benzodiazepine that activates γ-aminobutyric acid a (GABAa) receptors, in cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is not well understood. Therefore, we explored whether remimazolam activates protein kinase B (AKT)/glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK-3β)/nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) to attenuate brain I/R injury in transcerebral I/R-injured rats and transoxygenic glucose deprivation/reperfusion (OGD/R)-injured SY5Y cells.
Material And Methods: Remimazolam was added at the beginning of cell and rat reperfusion, and the PI3K/AKT inhibitor LY294002 was added to inhibit the AKT/GSK-3β/NRF2 pathway 24 h before cellular OGD/R treatment and 30 min before rat brain I/R treatment.

The incidence of heat-related illnesses and heatstroke continues to rise amidst global warming. Hyperthermia triggers inflammation, coagulation, and progressive multiorgan dysfunction, and, at levels above 40 °C, can even lead to cell death. Blood cells, particularly granulocytes and platelets, are highly sensitive to heat, which promotes proinflammatory and procoagulant changes.

Purpose/objective: The present review examined the evidence for a potentially bidirectional association between mobility function and cognitive function in midlife and older adulthood.
Research Method/design: In 2023-2024, we conducted a scoping review by carrying out systematic searches on Google Scholar, PubMed, and PsycINFO for articles that included measures of mobility function and cognitive function.
Results: Of the 1,504 articles screened, 40 were included for review.
