Published: April 2006

In Phys. Rev. E 70, 047102 (2004), Torgerson and Lamoreaux investigated for the first time the real-frequency spectrum of the finite temperature correction to the Casimir force, for metallic plates of finite conductivity. The very interesting result of this study is that the large correction from the TE mode is dominated by low frequencies, for which the dielectric description of the metal is invalid, and the authors correctly point out that a more realistic description is provided by low-frequency metallic boundary conditions. However, their subsequent analysis uses an incorrect form of metallic boundary conditions for TE modes. After correcting this error, we find that their main conclusion was nevertheless qualitatively correct: contrary to the result of the dielectric model, the thermal TE mode correction leads to an increase in the TE mode force of attraction between the plates. The correction found by us, however, has a magnitude about 20 times larger than that quoted by Torgerson and Lamoreaux.

Article Synopsis
  • - Critical Casimir forces act on particles in a near-critical fluid, allowing researchers to manipulate particle behavior based on surface properties and small temperature changes.
  • - The study explores how these forces can trap colloidal particles by using specially designed substrates with contrasting surface properties, enabling different levitation effects like sedimentation and point levitation.
  • - By analyzing various parameters, the research indicates that while the conditions for point levitation become limited when moved away from critical points, the trapping force increases, highlighting potential applications in sorting colloids by size and measuring thermodynamic properties.

Casimir interaction driven by hyperbolic polaritons.

Casimir interaction is an intriguing phenomenon that is induced by electromagnetic quantum fluctuations, which dominates the interaction between microstructures at small separations and is essential for micro- and nano-electromechanical systems (MEMS and NEMS). However, Casimir interaction driven by hyperbolic polaritons remains an unexplored frontier. In this work, we investigate the Casimir interaction between natural hyperbolic material hexagonal boron nitride from the perspective of force distribution with different optical axis orientations for the first time.

In recent years, plastic and metal 3D printing has experienced massive development in the professional and hobby spheres, especially for rapid prototyping, reverse engineering, maintenance and quick repairs. However, this technology is limited by a number of factors, with the most common being the cost and availability of the technology but also the lack of information on material properties. This study focuses on investigating the material properties of PLA, PETG, HIPS, PA, ABS and ASA in order to elucidate their behavior in terms of wear and thermal resistance.

Recent studies revealed anomalous underscreening in concentrated electrolytes, and we suggest that the underscreened electrostatic forces between membrane proteins play a significant role in the process of self-assembly. In this work, we assumed that the underscreened electrostatic forces compete with the thermodynamic Casimir forces induced by concentration fluctuations in the lipid bilayer, and developed a simplified model for a binary mixture of oppositely charged membrane proteins with different preference to liquid-ordered and liquid-disordered domains in the membrane. In the model, like macromolecules interact with short-range Casimir attraction and long-range electrostatic repulsion, and the cross-interaction is of the opposite sign.

Strong Casimir-like Forces in Flocking Active Matter.

Phys Rev Lett

Dipartimento di Scienza e Alta Tecnologia and Center for Nonlinear and Complex Systems, Università degli Studi dell'Insubria, Como, Italy.

Confining in space the equilibrium fluctuations of statistical systems with long-range correlations is known to result into effective forces on the boundaries. Here we demonstrate the occurrence of Casimir-like forces in the nonequilibrium context provided by flocking active matter. In particular, we consider a system of aligning self-propelled particles in two spatial dimensions that are transversally confined by reflecting or partially reflecting walls.
